A user is anyone who edits, develops, or merely only reads a wiki. In the case of Wikipedia, there are many users who only read the encyclopedia, but do not participate in creating content. In closed wikis, readers may be required to be editors. In a restricted editing wiki, such as Scholarpedia, it is assumed that there will be many more readers than editors – but all are users.

In the case of MediaWiki wikis, 'users' are classed as a user group, typically being the entry-level, but fundamental core group of people who create the content on the wiki.

The term user is a technical term for people who built the internet or other software, but it is not a good nor friendly term for outfacing public. Participant, or most any other term for a person is prefered.
