The wiki also welcomes technical articles, which can assist the modding community greatly.
History
In 2021, Kid Aces served as a bureaucrat for Nukapedia where she introduced many beneficial changes that included removing misinformation, head-canon and poorly written content. She also led a clean up of the wiki's Discord to make it LGBTQ+ friendly and welcoming to all. Many users believed the wiki was "stomping on creativity" and that SEO (Search Engine Optimization) was being negatively impacted, causing the archived wiki, The Vault, to appear in top search results, among other things.
On April 1, 2022, Aces was demoted and globally banned from FANDOM for a year. FANDOM, in the past and recently, have been criticized for banning wiki staff for invalid reasons and without warning. Herself and many other users felt the ban to be entirely unjust. Rather than appealing, Aces and Eckserah, Nukapedia's technical lead, began discussing the idea of an independent wiki. On April 7, 2022, the Discord, then called "Project Shmodex", was created, and on April 8, 2022, the Independent Fallout Wiki was officially founded. Eckserah handled all technical aspects of the wiki fork, while Kate handled the wiki editing spectrum. As an inside joke, the Discord was renamed to "Schmault-Tec".
Many Nukapedia users, editors and staff resigned to join the new one out of solidarity. Findabair joined her as a bureaucrat. In the following months, to attain help, the wiki began conversing with other wiki independent communities, such as the NIWA, Halopedia and the Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages. On May 27, 2022, the Mod space was introduced, designed to cater to modders and to allow Fallout mods to have dedicated pages. In early June, all content from Nukapedia was successfully forked over. On October 27, 2022, the Community space was created, allowing fanon content such as fanfiction, fan art, screenshots, artwork, PnP documents and Fallout 76 C.A.M.P. pages.
On October 23, 2022, the wiki officially entered early access, opening registration to new users. On October 28, 2022, C0NN1E joined the team as a community ambassador and editor. She reached out to The Doom Wiki and Combine OverWiki to discuss wiki affiliations, which were officially completed that same month. StrategyWiki, Halopedia and the Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages later followed suit in early November. On November 28, 2022, the wiki hosted its first mod, Vault 120. On December 1, 2022, the wiki was voted in as a member of the Gaming Wiki Network, becoming the largest member of the network. On December 19, 2022, JoJo's Bizarre Encyclopedia joined as an affiliate.
The wiki prides itself in being independent, and has introduced many new policies and changes designed stomp out misinformation, head-canon and flowery non-objective writing. The community is described as being extremely inclusive towards the LGBTQ+, GSRM, MOGAI, Plural and Otherkin communities, to which it welcomes with open arms. Many site staff and users identify within these communities.
The wiki runs on the MediaWiki wiki engine, and contains no advertising. It is not-for-profit and funded entirely by the site admin, Kid Aces.
