Trying to clarify that because this site uses structured data, some things are done a little differently than other wiki. (Wikipedia, MeatballWiki, etc). I think Structured Data is new to the wiki family, it is to me, so being clear about it will help.

Structured data means that there is data that is structured. In this wiki, we use {{Wiki}} (or something) on almost every single page. This is structured. We are not asking people to come here and make the page for their wiki any way they want to. We are requiring structure. MarkDilley | talk

Where are the instructions for Noobs?

Hi, I just added my wikisite Debatrix, and now that I have a little time I was wanting to add the structured data to its page on this wiki, but I am a relative noob at this and do not understand what some of the entries are, or how to add them. Hi. I hope that people who start new wiki are eventually funneled to the WikiIndex:Add a Wiki page. Was that page easy for you to find? If not, what could we do to help?

That page, in theory, leads people to create a new page on the WikiIndex with automagically included structured data template.

In practice, it's a bit confusing what to do next. People in a rush (or newcomers) are encouraged to at least type in the URL somewhere in the edit box and hit "save". Typically some other editor(s) will then fill in the other details later.

That automagically included template has a bunch of equal signs, one for each field.

The "field name" is on the left side of the equals (we leave those alone).

The actual field data on the right side of the equals (the side we edit).

That automagically included template fills in "default" field data. Any editor who fills in real data in any field deletes the default data in that field.

Again, in theory there should be enough information on the "Add a Wiki" page, and the pages you get to by clicking on the name of each field of the structured template (in the "normal view" or the "default preview), for anyone to fill in all the appropriate details on the field data.

Is there some way we could make this clearer, without overwhelming newcomers with excessively detailed instructions? --DavidCary 00:33, 8 September 2009 (EDT)

Licence added to structured data without any information

Someone has altered the structured data so that a licence line is included. I actually agree that is a good thing, but there are no instructions on what options there are. That effectively means it is a bit useless.

Also, there are older pages that don't have the licence line. Can someone create a robot that adds the line, as well as something that links pages into some sort of category that people can use to see what wikis need licence information added? David Shepheard 18:51, 14 September 2009 (EDT)

OK, two out of your three suggestions have now been implemented:

what options Done. For each item on the left side of the template, you can now click the item (perhaps in preview mode) and get a list of most of the options. In this case, clicking on the words "Wiki license" takes you to Category:Wiki license which lists about a dozen licenses -- about a dozen options.

category that people can use to see what wikis need licence information added? Done. at Category:Wiki YourWiki'sLicense, which (I hope) lists every wiki that still needs license information added.

robot that adds the line ... [to] ... older pages that don't have the licence line. Mm, that's a good idea.

Thanks, David! Nice work! The license field was added to {{Wiki}} back in October 2008 by Speckmade. It is an optional parameter, so it doesn't break the extant pages. I agree that it's helpful to explain how to use it, so I think we've made progress. Unfortunately, Category:Wiki YourWiki'sLicense only lists wikis which were created after October 2008. I suppose we should update the screenshot here, too. --MarvelZuvembie 18:55, 10 March 2010 (EST)

I recently updated this, so as to comply with structured data. Form:Wiki - which is utilised from the WikiIndex:Add a Wiki - now has drop-down selection boxes for all available licenses. However, if an editor uses the conventional 'edit' tab (instead of the 'edit with form' tab), they can still add a non-standard license - but this will now show up with a yellow 'caution' icon next to it (to indicate that it is not one of our established structured data elements) - as will any of the fields which rely on Special:Properties.
