WikiBirthday
Some years, people get together to celebrate the original wiki's birthday, March 25, 1995 as WikiBirthday.
Connection points:
- Here in this wiki! Anyone can get an account and edit.
- A private (for now) WikiBirthday messaging group. Ask someone who has edited this page recently to get added.
- https://www.facebook.com/WikiBirthday (Is there a Facebook wiki? Do we care? Anyway, it's the oldest WikiBirthday link we could find.)
30th WikiBirthday — March 25, 2025
Below is just a start, feel free to add more ideas. We just had a first organizing meeting, and there will be another next week! (Tuesday, Feb 11) Reach out if you would like to get involved, you can reach me at [email protected] --John Abbe (talk) 03:22, 5 February 2025 (UTC)
What is already in the works?
Some kind of open video call - featuring one or more names you will recognize and want to hear from, *and* with plenty of time (probably in breakout groups if it's a lot of people?) for people to catch up or get to know each other, share some wiki stories, etc. Learn something, connect with someone, and celebrate!
Definitely some kind of card or other wiki artifact that everyone can contribute to in some way. Stay tuned, and/or add ideas here.
Other possibilities
What else would you like to see?
That is a Tuesday. So, we could lean into the Tech Tuesdays thing. And/or, March 26 could be a global retro/reunion for WikiWednesdays, everyone organize whatever they want locally. Suggest we pick one of these early on and go for it.
Who's organizing WikiBirthday this year?
So far: John Abbe, Mark Dilley, Cary, Phoebe, Pete, ???
Next steps include networking and generally getting the word out: Contact wikizens, wiki developers, maker spaces, free/open projects (OSU still host a bunch?), other coder commons, Wikia refugees, etc.

WonderfulWikiWeb
Many people are understandably pretty down on the Internet and web these days, as for-profit companies exploit their attention (and pocketbooks!) with dark patterns. But these tools have also given us so much, and continue to! We want people to notice and love and defend the wonderful things about the Internet, and we're [inspired by how the IETF organizes itself](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1tgZ86ugijXPUOo_lD3kLfQBPbneecUNzZim1GOgkC1M/), and some of the [things they say](https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/rfc8890). We want people to notice and love and defend the wonderful things about the web, and wiki has brought so much wonder to so many, we see this 30th WikiBirthday as an opportunity to celebrate and share that wonder with each other, and as much as we can with the rest of the world as well.

Invitation
is the 29th anniversary of the launch of the first wiki! On March 25, 1995, Ward Cunningham launched the Portland Pattern Repository, which is still available today at http://wiki.c2.com
Since then, countless other wikis have been born exploring everything from patterns & pattern languages to organizations, to fandoms, to journalistic efforts, to individual projects, to entire movements, and beyond, including of course many of the world's largest encyclopedias. Countless people use wikis every day, because wikis have become a key part of how humans tell – and edit – our stories.
A few dozen people were on a 25th anniversary WikiBirthday call a few years ago, which provoked much joy. In the hopes of having a similarly wonderful time together this year, some of us have organized a couple of video calls to meet with other wiki aficianodos. Ward Cunningham will be with us on both of these calls, and we hope you can join us as well!
This invite is also going out to other community-minded technologists, unconference and Open Space organizers, artists, Wikipedians, and many others. It's a chance to share what you are up to with wiki lately, and any new (& old) wiki tools you find useful or promising. We can also highlight past wiki successes, mourn those no longer with us and wiki efforts which didn't work out, reflect on lessons learned, etc.
One World Birthday
One World Birthday was a celebration of:
- 20 Years of Wikipedia
- 25 years of Wiki
- 10 years of Wikidata
