North Rhine-Westphalia (German: Nordrhein-Westfalen) (NRW), is a federal state (Land) of the Federal Republic of Germany. Part of the former West Germany, North Rhine-Westphalia is the fourth largest state of Germany by size, the most populous and most densely populated German state. It shares international borders with the Netherlands and Belgium to its west, and domestic state borders with Lower Saxony to its north-east, Hesse to its south-east, and Rhineland-Palatinate to its south.
