Located in north-west Germany, the state of Lower Saxony (German: Niedersachsen; Low German: Neddersassen; Saterland Frisian: Läichsaksen) encircles the city state of Bremen, and is bordered by the states of Hamburg (city state), Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern to its north-east, Saxony-Anhalt to its east, Thuringia to its south-east, Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia to its south-west. It has a national border with the Netherlands to its west, and a maritime border with the North Sea to its north.
