ZIM is a file format which stores wiki content for use in offline applications. An open file format standard, the primary purpose of ZIM is to display the contents created on Wikipedia, and other Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) projects. The format of ZIM allows for the compression of its articles. ZIM file is also able to contain full-text search indices, along with other auxiliary files.
The ZIM acronym is taken from 'Zeno IMproved', signifying that it replaces the earlier Zeno file format.
In addition to the ZIM open file format, the openZIM project provides support for Kiwix, an open-source ZIM reader which also displays wiki site content for offline reading. openZIM project is sponsored by Wikimedia CH, and supported is by the Wikimedia Foundation.
