Just type <tt><nowiki>[[Category:Avatars]]</nowiki></tt>, or whatever you'd like to call the new category, in the edit box if the avatar file, then save it. You'll then have a red link at the bottom of the page. Click on that red link cat, and type the full name of it's mother category - in double square brackets, and save. Voila!
