Sysop: Difference between revisions

The term '''sysop''', also written as '''SysOp''', originates from a shortened [[wp:Portmanteau|portmanteau]] of 'system operator'.  On a [[wiki]] or other systems which deal with [[user]] accounts ''online''; such as [[:Category:Usenet|bulletin board systems]] or [[:Category:Internet forum|internet forums]], and ''offline''; as in [[:Category:Intranet|corporate intranet]], are also known as '''[[administrator]]s''' (which is itself frequently shortened to '''[[admin]]s''' for brevity).  Sysops / {{tag|admin}}istrators can perform [[Special:ListGroupRights|administrative functions]] that regular [[:Category:User group|user account]] holders are unable to do.  Sysops can [[WikiIndex:Blocking and banning policy|block]] difficult people (both registered users and / or [[IP editor]]s) or unblock them, and can [[WikiIndex:Deleting pages|delete pages]] containing [[WikiIndex:Spam Control Policy|spam]] and / or [[vandal]]ism.  Sysops can also protect pages, unprotect them, and [[edit]] protected pages.

Contrary to [[bureaucrat]]s, sysops aren't necessarily the '[[leader]]s' of wikis; sysops are better compared to 'janitors', because their primary role is to clean up all the wiki crap; such as deleting [[spam]] and reverting [[vandal]]ism.
