This operation was way more complicated than I realized, just because I don't know what I'm doing. You .htaccess didn't work for me, likely because my directory structure is different. I ended up re-installing in the /w directory (instead of /wiki) and then following these instructions so my wiki does appear to be at http://chicagocoop.net/wiki and without the index.php http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Eliminating_index.php_from_the_url#Using_a_rewrite_rule_in_a_.htaccess_file THanks much for geting me started!
