The name EcuRed recovers several meanings that refer, firstly, to the ecumene, formerly an inhabited part of the Earth and today the world and known cultures as a whole. Ecumene literally means world, world of men and women who relate through culture and knowledge, regardless of where they are physically. EcuRed is also ecumene, it aspires to be.

E-cu also means Cuban Encyclopedia. Red comes to complement its name that represents Cuban Encyclopedia on the Net.

The Cuban encyclopedia EcuRed arises from the need to provide universal knowledge in a .cu domain in order to be accessible to the vast majority of Cubans, who, due to the restrictions imposed by the United States government blockade against Cuba, cannot can access the internet. The EcuRed also fulfils the objective of showing a decolonising point of view, (which can seldom be found in the media with a 'western' vision and under the power that money grants) and wants to become a powerful {{tag|education}}al tool with all the advantages of an online encyclopedia.

In the summer of 2009, work began on an experimental basis by the National Office for Computerisation (ONI) on an encyclopedia that is given the provisional name Ecupedia. In the project development process, ONI managed the programming and technological support and with the participation of the Institute of Scientific and Technological Information (IDICT) the governing documents were created, preparing the editorial standards, policies, regulations, methodological indications and procedures technical-legal established for networking.

In September of the same year the Young Computer and Electronics Club (JCCE) joined, being the institution that gave a boost to the project given its wide distribution of institutions throughout the country.  Since the beginning of 2010, Joven Club has assumed the web hosting, administration and maintenance of its services and, together with the IDICT, the management and updating of its contents, thus creating the EcuRed Technical Group.

El nombre EcuRed recupera varios significados que remiten, en primer lugar, a la ecúmene, antes parte habitada de la Tierra y hoy conjunto del mundo y culturas conocidos. Ecúmene significa literalmente mundo, mundo de hombres y mujeres que se relacionan a través de la cultura y el conocimiento, más allá de donde físicamente estén. EcuRed es también ecúmene, aspira a serlo.

E-cu además significa Enciclopedia Cubana. Red viene a complementar su nombre que representa Enciclopedia Cubana en la Red.

En el verano de 2009 se comienza a trabajar de forma experimental por la Oficina Nacional para la Informatización (ONI) en una enciclopedia a la que se le da como nombre provisional Ecupedia. En el proceso de desarrollo del proyecto, la ONI gestionó la programación y el respaldo tecnológico y con la participación del Instituto de Información Científica y Tecnológica (IDICT) se crearon los documentos rectores, elaborando las normas editoriales, políticas, normativas, indicaciones metodológicas y procedimientos técnico-legales establecidos para el trabajo en red.

Luego de obtener positivos resultados se decide formalizar el proyecto y el 14 de diciembre de 2010 nace oficialmente la EcuRed. En este mismo año 2010 se trasladan los servidores para el Centro de Datos de ETECSA.
