:One caveat with hotlinking: As of MediaWiki 1.8, this appears to be turned off by default (although it can be re-enabled by system administrators by changing LocalSettings.php). Default in earlier versions was to replace any exposed link to an external image URL with the hotlinked image itself. This may cause hotlinked images to by default stop displaying as images (and instead appear as the corresponding external URL plaintext) if data from this wiki is imported into current (1.9-alpha) or recent MW versions. Perhaps hotlinks are falling out-of-favour on some sites as they consume bandwidth on the external site to which they link, as well as being prone to abuse as a means to link 'shock images' from wiki pages. --[[User:Carlb|Carlb]] 14:13, 15 December 2006 (EST)
