The '''GNU Free Documentation License''' ('''GNU FDL''', or more commonly '''GFDL''') is a {{tag|copyleft}} free content [[:Category:License|license]] that was previously frequently used on many [[:Category:All|wiki]] websites for [[:Category:Wiki license|licensing]] their contents therein. It was created by the [https://www.FSF.org Free Software Foundation] (FSF), being designed especially for [[:Category:Documentation|documentation]] of [[:Category:Software|software]].  The GFDL is one of the oldest {{tag|free content}} licenses. However, the specialisation on software documentation brings about some problems when the GFDL used for licensing other sorts of content; see article [[GFDL concerns]] for more information.

The most notable user of the GFDL: the [[:Category:Wikipedia|Wikipedia]] project, and its sister projects of the [[:Category:Wikimedia Foundation|Wikimedia Foundation]] (WMF), moved from licensing their contents under GFDL to a {{Wp|Wikipedia:Licensing update|double licensing scheme}}, with the comparable [[:Category:Wiki Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike|Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license]] (CC-BY-SA), when the GNU granted the one-time chance to migrate content from the GNU Free Documentation License to this [[:Category:Wiki Creative Commons|Creative Commons]] license in 2009.
