No boilerplate welcomes, please[edit]
I - if I'd be new to wikiindex - would prefer a few welcoming words typed by hand. Is there anybody who shares my opinion? --Wolf | talk 17:56, 10 November 2009 (EST) ...in the hope my english isn't wrong...
- Yes, I also like words that come from a human, rather than a machine. What do you think about a little bit of both -- for example, the welcome to User talk:Dukester101? --DavidCary 22:43, 12 April 2010 (EDT)
- I think the boilerplate welcome is perfectly acceptable, as it conveys some standard and important 'procedures' here on WikiIndex. However, I also think it is equally important to add a few personally typed words too. --Hoof Hearted 09:19, 2 January 2012 (PST)
- When confirming a user accounts request, where can I add some personal words? --Wolf | talk 09:20, 26 September 2014 (UTC)
- On their talk page ;-) --Manorainjan (talk)

Improving the boilerplate[edit]
It reads:
- We prefer RealNames, but you can and you are welcome to make constructive additions if you don't like to use your real name.
That means: You are only then welcome to make constructive additions if You don't like to use Your real name. If You like to use Your real name, You are not welcome to make constructive edits?
This comes from mingling the constructive edits topic with the real name topic. I'm also used to create long winding sentences. But on such a boilerplate all sentences should be short an easy. And for discussions on real names it is too late. That person has already decided which name to use. And this decision was accepted by welcoming the new user. So, cut it out! --Manorainjan (talk) 10:52, 26 September 2014 (UTC)
- I did some changes on the User talk:Lightboard Smith. Note, that i personalized the wording be inserting words like YOU and US. --Manorainjan
I see that users may later on decide to reveal their real name. I do not see, that they later on decide to edit under that name. What I see from You (Peu ;-), Hoofy, Birdy ;), Belle, Koavf, Rathbone, that they continue under pseudonym, if they create a real name page or not or if they mention their real name on their user name or not. Whereas Mark, YiFei (I assume this to be his real name) me and TeraS, that we all startet with a real name or at least the first part of it. And that did not change. So the change to be seen is the revelation of the real name or parts of it later on, no renaming of pseudos to real names and than editing under real names. Therefore I dismiss Your argument.
I repeat: The request to use ones real name has it's use in the form for account request. It would be supportet, if the requester would be named there by real name. So the form should include Marks real name as the one who requests this. Tit for tat. In order to encourage registered users to reveal their real name, it would be helpful to paste the user info template (which needs to be improved, Liz will surely like to help here ;-) on the user page right from the start. It includes an optional real name field. The more active or 'senior' local users use this template and fill it, the more we can expect new users to do the same. Tit for tat. --Manorainjan (talk) 12:35, 26 September 2014 (UTC)
continued from history of template...[edit]
But then when you welcome a user why does it say Welcome to Wikiindex Kaovf? 67.244.49.134 11:10, 19 October 2016 (PDT)
- Usernames This is because I am making the accounts. I'll just delete the code for now until I can get it to work like expected. Koavf (talk) 11:13, 19 October 2016 (PDT)
GIF text[edit]
I have to admit, I think the replacement of actual text with an animated GIF of the same text is not an improvement. Does anyone else have a perspective? Koavf (talk) 19:49, 4 January 2018 (PST)
- Koavf Thanks for your thoughts – at least someone has noticed the change! :-P
- I changed the template for a couple of reasons.
- I am still not overly comfortable with the plethora of languages – who actually knows if said translations are correct? For all we know, they could be saying something illegal – especially so with the non-roman texts!
- Sometimes, a change is good. We NEED our wiki to become more dynamic – especially on our 'front door' main page. Templates are also good for spreading changes throughout the wiki.
- Best regards, and a belated 2018 :-)) Sean, aka Hoof Hearted • Admin / 'Crat • talk2HH 19:04, 9 January 2018 (PST)
- And a happy 2018 to you as well, Sean. I agree that the site could use a facelift. When it comes to the text, I made many of them myself, so I feel pretty confident about their veracity. I have to admit, I'm still not a big fan of text-as-image. As much as I agree with you almost all the time, this is one of those times when I don't. Koavf (talk) 01:02, 19 January 2018 (PST)
