A warm welcome to my talk / discussion page, 172.26.10.14 :-)

If you wish to talk to me about a new subject not already listed here, please click on the 'new section' (or '+') tab at the top of the screen to start a new subject. Or if you wish to reply to an existing comment (either on my talk page or any other talk page), please click on the section [edit] to the right of the relevant subject header line, and please indent your replies with one (or more) colon(s) (:) as appropriate. Please, PLEASE add your signature (-- ~~~~) to all comments or replies you make.

If comments or questions are asked on this page, I will leave my answer here (so please add my talk page to your 'watchlist'). For comments or questions left on other pages, my replies or answers will be left on those specific pages (so again, please add those to your watchlist if you wish to follow any replies).

If you miss previous discussions (which are now no longer visible), you may look through any historical items of discussion by clicking on the 'history' tab at the top of the page. Occasionally, I might remove and archive completed topics which may no longer be relevant, and there is no point in having a cluttered talk page!
My talk page archives:1 – 2011 • 2 – 2012 • 3 – 2013 • 4 – 2014–2015 • 5 – 2016–2017 • 6 – 2018–2020

I heart this answer :-)

Thanks - I try my best to keep things rational and balanced on an even keel. Sorry I've not been very active here recently - I've got a lot of personal issues to deal with :'( --Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmintalk2HH 10:58, 26 January 2013 (PST)

PynchonWiki

PynchonWiki has been restored (not by me). I don't agree with your decision to delete it or that we can't include meta-sites within this index. If these were several unrelated, independently-operated sites with the same topic, I could see how a category would suffice, but in this case, the were several related sites all managed by the same entity. It's not quite the same as Wikia, but that is an example of when a broader site has a listing, even though it's pages may not be editable. Yes, I should get off my lazy butt and create entries for the individual wikis, but even when I do that I think we still should include the meta-site in the index. With respect, MarvelZuvembie (talk) 16:13, 8 January 2013 (PST)

Hi Marvel - you are so right. Yes, this is a portal page for a group of wikis, and we have well established consensus to include these. Maybe I was suffering from 'deletionitis' - but thankfully, Mark spotted my error and corrected it. And your butt isn't lazy - they all have their own entries - I had just moved them all to a neater page name without leaving a redirect. Best regards, -- Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmintalk2HH 17:20, 26 January 2013 (PST)

What does "YourSoftwareLicense" mean?

I was thinking it would be best to add descriptors to most of the red link categories so people have a better idea what they refer to, but I have no idea what the category "YourSoftwareLicense" refers to, was wondering if you do. Arcane (talk) 07:28, 13 February 2013 (PST)Arcane

Re:MediaWiki, logos, etc.

On the "stub" to "good" article threshold, I believe that's more a determination of the wiki administrators from wiki to wiki than the software. My recent wiki on Shoutwiki features articles that Wikipedia would consider stubs, but they are meant to be short, as they give a simple overview of things useful for MediaWiki beginners.

As for my logo creation skills, I'm fairly decent at creating simple text logos, but I'm not a very good artist. However, we could probably make a really small version of the current wiki logo our favicon, which should be easy to create in any picture editor.

Arcane (talk) 09:36, 15 March 2013 (PDT)Arcane

Hi again - I'll answer it here, so as not to break up the conversation!
Stub vs good . . . hmmm. Is there a rough ballpark default figure? Reason I ask is that for MoinMoin - I've been counting all pages in their listings, but (for MediaWiki) if we knew the stub threshold was - say 500 bytes, then we could make the necessary adjustments for the MoinMoin listings. I also feel your pain on the MediaWiki stub vs good - if you look at Ross-Tech Wiki (a wiki which I often use), their own stats show 1182 'good' pages, and their short pages (when the url is manually manipulated to show all pages on the wiki) lists 1267 pages - and many of those 'short pages' are actually valid and complete pages! (Actually, it seems that only 85 are classed as 'short' - 1267 minus 1182 - and that threshold seems to be around 315 bytes). <ramblings out loud>
Favicon . . . I was thinking of something like just the black 'W' and the red 'I' ('WI'), as scaled-down full-size logos can often look dreadful. The Wikipedia 'W' and the Google 'g' seem to work well. If you can do something along those lines, we'll then need to persuade Mark to include it.<wink>
BTW, if you need to mail me off-wiki, TeraS has my e-mail address (dunno if she still has it) - though I don't always check it! :( Best, Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmintalk2HH 10:28, 15 March 2013 (PDT)
Hmm, I could see about making a text fav icon, shouldn't be hard to create. As for your email, thanks, I'll ask TeraS about it. Should I upload my proposed fav icon here or send you a copy via email?
On the stub issue, I would say that 500 bytes actually is a fair average for a "stub" article (in terms of size).
Arcane (talk) 13:46, 15 March 2013 (PDT)Arcane
Upload the favicon here (and copy it to MarkDilley). I'll add a comment on the MoinMoin talk page for the stub threshold. Thanks for your work here. Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmintalk2HH 13:56, 15 March 2013 (PDT)
Thanks Sean, your work is appreciated too :) Anyway, I left a copy of the proposed favicon on Mark's talk page, hope it looks good.
Arcane (talk) 14:57, 15 March 2013 (PDT)Arcane

Look forward to a Favicon!! We had one once :-) - Please add it to the upgrade page - where we can have a discussion about it if needed. Also, if we need to change the stub size, please add that to the update page to, or if it is something I can do, let me know. Best, MarkDilley

Sturmkrieg

The name I was using was suggested by one of your administrators. If you want to change it, than please do not change it to something biased. Your changes have all resulted in biased titles that give the impression that it was their idea when it wasn't. If you want to keep pages about them, that's fine, but please don't make titles that make the original wiki seem like some sort of crap side thing. Sturmkrieger (talk) 09:29, 19 March 2013 (PDT)

Erm . . . you are correct - it was a 'suggestion', and not a statement of fact. Also, please be aware, the administrator who suggested that name to you is just one of a team of admins (and who is also quite new to WikiIndex) - and whilst we are all part of said 'team', we all sometimes have slightly differing ideas. Furthermore, any 'administrator' action can be overturned by the site owners (and or beaurocrats).
The crucial issue here though, is that we have clearly defined article naming conventions - WikiIndex:Naming Conventions. Perhaps you'd be kind enough to read it, instead of accusing me of bias! The name I changed it to reflects the actual domain of your wiki. Please remember, your wiki is very new, whereas the other wiki has been established for a long time. Your wiki is sparse, devoid of content (apart from bitching about the other wiki), lacks page views (see wikiFactor), and lacks any graphical content or customisation - whereas the other wiki has tons of content, has established page views, has amazing graphics and customisation - and generally looks a very professional wiki. Now, whilst I understand Arcane's comment about 'first come, first dibs on article name' - I don't actually agree. As it stands, we have two wikis on the same subject matter - one new and devoid of content, and the other long established and very popular. If, in time, your own wiki grows and matures to a similar level as the other wiki - we can then rename the other wiki, and create a disambiguation.
Please, be advised to direct your efforts into building up your own wiki, and then reap the rewards from your efforts. You will win no friends here on WikiIndex (and maybe not on your own wiki) if you continue with your antagonistic efforts. Try to work with the other wiki, rather than swimming against the tide. If you can't do that, then just agree to disagree, draw a line in the sand, and move on - respecting each others point of view. I wish you well, best regards --Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmintalk2HH 11:28, 19 March 2013 (PDT)
I suggested the name of Sturmkrieger's wiki (as in, the site the user administrates) be changed to reflect his stated intentions for his wiki. To be exact, the name I saw for his wiki (on the header bar of my browser and his homepage) was "Sturmkrieg". My suggested name would have helped you dispel any confusion anyone trying to visit the site "Sturmkrieg" on the internet might have when trying to find the wiki of the name (since two wikis now share the same name). I did not intend to imply that this user wiki should be renamed here on WikiIndex to "The True Sturmkrieger Wiki", that was something I should have clarified and I apologize for the confusion. I plan to stand by and defer to yours and the other senior administrators judgment on this matter (especially since I'm still inexperienced, as this incident has proven), and shall direct this user's further inquires to be dealt with by someone with more experience. As for naming comment, I share the same sentiments and believe the first wiki should not be confused with the second until the second reaches a similar level of maturity regarding site content (then a rename/disambiguation could be discussed), and if I caused any confusion or made an erroneous judgment, I apologize for my indiscretion and/or carelessness.

BlueSpice - a MediaWiki extension?

NewWiki

I think we should use Template:NewWiki boilerplate or Form:Wiki in Community Portal but not Template:Wiki. It doesn't work.--Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 04:49, 13 April 2013 (PDT)

In what way does Template:Wiki not work? And I'm not sure either Template:NewWiki boilerplate or Form:Wiki will make any difference, because they both call on Template:Wiki to render the infobox. Interested to hear your thoughts though :) Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmintalk2HH 05:41, 13 April 2013 (PDT)
In Community Portal, go to "Hosting a Wiki? – Add it to WikiIndex!", type anything into the first input, such as "New", and press "create a new Wiki article page", and it displays most of the code of Template:Wiki. That makes the target page just a copy of the template, not the boilerplate. So how's it working? --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 06:03, 13 April 2013 (PDT)
Ahhh - yes, I now see the problem. If you look at our sidebar on the left, click on 'Add a Wiki', it opens up WikiIndex:Add a Wiki - and when you use that page to create a new wiki page, it works OK. I think the problem is unique to the WikiIndex:Community portal page, because on that, I found the problem you described. I tried to change the preload from Template:Wiki to Form:Wiki - but it still failed to fix the problem. I'll have another look at that later to try and fix it. Thanks for highlighting this problem. Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmintalk2HH 09:20, 13 April 2013 (PDT)

OK - I think I fixed it - let me know if you notice any more faults :) Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmintalk2HH 11:18, 13 April 2013 (PDT)

Also, I think adding parameter "button text=create a new Wiki article page" looks better. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 06:07, 14 April 2013 (PDT)
I'm not sure that can be done when using Semantic Forms - I can't find any way to change button text labels. Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmintalk2HH 06:37, 14 April 2013 (PDT)

New person

Why you edit this but also edit this. You know, when we create a wiki people page, we use Template:New Person. Also, those edits makes no difference. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 05:53, 13 April 2013 (PDT)

The edit I did to your user name page was because you had it listed at the start of the Category:Wiki People - when it should have been alphabetically sorted. The change to the template should ensure that the template is listed at the start of the category, rather than being 'lost' amongst the alphabetical sorting (all templates are sorted to display at the top of their relevant categories here on WikiIndex). I have subsequently noticed an error in the template, which I've hopefully corrected. And I'm not sure I agree that all users here use that template to create their own name-spaces - I certainly didn't :p ... Best regards :) Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmintalk2HH 09:00, 13 April 2013 (PDT)

Go to dead wikis?

Some pages tell the user to go to some dead wikis and edit them. For example, Wikiindex:About tells me to go to Yellowikis and create a listing. But that's not possible since it is dead. So I think we should comment them out. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 01:40, 20 April 2013 (PDT)

The original Yellowikis.org may be dead, but its replacement at Yellowikis.Wikia.com is alive and kicking (shame it's on Wikia though!) Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmintalk2HH 02:10, 20 April 2013 (PDT)
Sorry for not noticing it. Also, I made the page more readable. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 02:40, 20 April 2013 (PDT)
No worries. But the Yellowikis page doesn't now look right - the prose is mainly applicable to the orginal .org variant, but being as Wikia took over Yellowikis, it sort of also applies to both variants too!! It probably shouldn't be divided by section headings, but instead have all the prose referring to both .... Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmintalk2HH 07:47, 20 April 2013 (PDT)

Also, we can't build the WikiOhana, as said on the Welcome page. It is a dead wiki too. See Talk:MarkDilley#WikiOhana for why to change the link to WikiOhana. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 07:00, 20 April 2013 (PDT)

I've previously tried arguing my case on the WikiOhana issue on the front page - and lost :( Can you think of another wiki to go there instead? Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmintalk2HH 07:47, 20 April 2013 (PDT)
How about WikiApiary? It's alive, but if we change, we are advertising for other wikis, not us. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 03:48, 23 April 2013 (PDT)
Not sure on WikiApiary . . . I'd prefer a more 'community' based wiki. I've been thinking about the WikiTourBus - how I might integrate that into the main page. Any thoughts on that? Best Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmintalk2HH 03:55, 23 April 2013 (PDT)
How about Visitors, check out our WikiTourBus, and you can add a wiki to our site if you like to. (Need some rewording) --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 04:25, 23 April 2013 (PDT)

Template:Tag

I think this version of Template:Tag is better. It works like an ordinary link, but the newer edit don't. (See the code of this post.) We can also fix space the problem by adding the nowiki tag. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 06:08, 20 April 2013 (PDT)

Does the &nbsp work better at the begining of the code? Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmintalk2HH 08:02, 20 April 2013 (PDT)
Yes, but you see, there is two spaces before the word it on my first post. You can also see my sandbox. And from it you can see nowiki tag works better than &nbsp ; (It neither add a space or delete a space before the link). --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 19:58, 20 April 2013 (PDT)
OK, go ahead and make the change. And don't forget to fill in the edit summary if you can please for all of your edits :) Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmintalk2HH 23:39, 20 April 2013 (PDT)
Thanks, and I wll try to remember to fill it.--Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 00:37, 21 April 2013 (PDT)
OK, I think I fixed it, and thanks again for unlocking it. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 00:46, 21 April 2013 (PDT)
That looks better - thanks for your great work here :-) Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmintalk2HH 00:48, 21 April 2013 (PDT)

for building out the page - issue for me is that I have the sidebar bug in which I just see the default sidebar.... ~~ MarkDilley

No probs - I used the search!!!! :p. And I'm still getting differing sidebars throughout the day - maybe the sidebar bug is dependent on weather there is an odd number of days in the month ...... Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmintalk2HH 09:21, 23 April 2013 (PDT)

Recent changes of Wiki Engines

I think the recent changes of Wiki Engines should be about the Wiki Engines, not the wiki itself. For example, Category:MediaWiki as https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Release_notes, not https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:RecentChanges. Also, there shouldn't be any wikinodes in Wiki Engines. That's for wikis. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 06:54, 24 April 2013 (PDT)

On your first point, I agree - I think anything such as release notes, change log, or development roadmap would be ideal - so feel free to change any that you find. On your second point - I'm not so sure, WikiNodes are just a way of community building, and many of the smaller wiki engines (which are usually a fork of another engine) generally have some degree of co-operation - so there isn't really a right or wrong answer to that point.

If the WikiEngine eats its own dogfood then it should be RecentChanges - else a change log, release notes, whatever would be great! As for a WikiNode for a WikiEngine, only if it is eating its own dogfood :-) WikiNode is one of the ideas that came from Lion Kimbro, he has since moved on from the idea - I love it, so keep it going with a domain name pointed to the archived idea of a wiki, http://WikiNode.info ~~ MarkDilley

I'm enjoying your energy and enthusiasm here - it's greatly appreciated :-)))) Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmintalk2HH 07:16, 24 April 2013 (PDT) - ditto! ~~ MarkDilley
How about About URLs which tells the characteristics of the engine? For Category:MediaWiki, it's https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 03:36, 25 April 2013 (PDT)

Infobox linking

Why not making the logos of infoboxes link to the target page just like Template:Wiki? See one of your edit here. It's more convenient for us to go to the wiki with the linking. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 03:28, 25 April 2013 (PDT)

Spam

How's User:RosalieSa not spamming? The language of his website is not English, but they speak English in Australia, so that's an ad instead of his own website. It should be deleted. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 07:44, 25 April 2013 (PDT)

Category:Wikimedia Foundation sorting

The old edits of yours for main wikis such as this are fine. It makes the main wikis ahead of the language ones. But why you also do this edit? It makes them mixed. --Zhuyifei1999 | talk 04:06, 26 April 2013 (PDT)

A way to "rename" category pages

I saw you added a note to WikiIndex:Naming Conventions‎ about how category pages can't be renamed, which is true.

However, since we have the Replace Text extension, there is a workaround which preserves the edit history.

  1. Create category B (if it doesn't already exist) for all the pages you want to move from category A
  2. Go to the Special:ReplaceText page and the "Original text" box should have something like [[Category:A]] and the "Replacement text" box should have [[Category:B]]
  3. Go down to the optional filters to the "Replace only in category:" box, add in the name of Category A.
  4. Replace text in page contents should be checked
  5. Click continue, verify the changes, then execute the replace text script.

This will automatically make the changes you want, tying them to the user who executed the script, and will leave an entry in the edit history of each page, preserving that for CC BY SA. Arcane (talk) 05:49, 30 April 2013 (PDT)Arcane

Is the sticking issue here, loosing the edit history of the category page itself? If that is the case, can't we just drop that in the edit history, keep the category page and redirect it to the new category? ~~ MarkDilley
I'm aware of the Special:ReplaceText - and more importantly, its limitations. I haven't yet tried the above suggestion from Arcane - but I think that suggestion misses the crucial point. That method is surely just for preserving edit histories of articles within said categories - and not the text within actual categories. That method just batch-moves article pages from one category to another.
Mark is correct, the issue is the edit history of the text on the actual category page. And yes, in theory, we can keep the wrong category and turn it into a redirect (which will of course preserve edit history). However, redirecting categories doesn't work properly - look at this specific example: Category:Wiki Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike currently contains 10 sub-cats and 1,317 article pages; but if you look at its 'incoming' redirects - there are a further 24 article pages in the old abbreviated category Category:Wiki CC-BY-SA - and those 24 articles don't/won't show up in the correct Category:Wiki Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike. We can manage this specific situation due to the structured data warning flag (yellow caution triangle) in the wiki infobox. But for non-infobox categories, ie; those created by using either the tag template or the traditional category name at the foot of the edit box - there is no warning, because those are not part of the structured data - hence why using redirects on categories is a bad idea.
In summary, I don't think that deleting a wrong category and creating a new correctly named category will be a problem where the category has no text (maybe on freshly created categories). But for categories such as say Category:Wikia which has a huge amount of text, and a huge edit history - that would be a major problem if we were to delete Category:Wikia and say copy and paste the text to a new cat such as Category:Wikia articles. Hence why I think we should take more care on the specific issue of creating categories. Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmintalk2HH 01:50, 1 May 2013 (PDT)

visit stop

I was thinking of this instead

TourBusStop # 7

Bus image

visit stop

Haa, OK, I see. I'm not sure that would work for those with more than one bus route, look at English Wikipedia to see how the five bus routes nicely fill the bottom line. If we used your method, then any with more than one route wouldn't look correct. :// Also, the hash is an 'Americanism' (Nr. is German, No. is Brit English) - and I think it probably works better for us here at WikiIndex if we try to keep out country-specific abbreviations, and aim for an international and multilingual audience. Gotta take the wife to work in a mo. Catch up again later.  :)) Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmintalk2HH 20:56, 1 May 2013 (PDT)

Cool - I see the issue with multiple bus routes, I still think the line should be moved up below TourBusStop / Bus image / visit stop - ok with an internationalized numbering system or leaving blank. ~~ MarkDilley

Hmmmm ... wierd! I have no idea how the log shows your edits as self patroled ... but if you check Special:RecentChanges, your edits still have the red caution icon, which means they are not patroled. Our software in general seems to have wierd configuration settings for many things ... sysops get blocked by the spam filter, yet new accounts seem to bypass it! Maybe you can collect a list of configuration bugs and oddities, and let Mark know. Best Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmintalk2HH 11:49, 4 May 2013 (PDT)
I can't see whether an edit is patrolled because I'm not an admin. :( --YiFei | talk 18:04, 4 May 2013 (PDT)

Which wiki community standard are you applying?

for this - and I don't remember the edit you are referring to? Wiki culture that I was involved in did not have "user pages" - you just had your page and anyone could edit it and you words - anytime. Meatball:WikiNow Best, MarkDilley

LabVIEW Wiki

How can it need love? I can't get an account even if I'm experienced with LabVIEW, and neither edit it. :( --YiFei | talk 12:08, 5 May 2013 (UTC)

It isn't really dormant, if you click on the recent changes link from our LabVIEW Wiki article (which is now set to 300 days and 100 edits), you should see some constructive editing from March 2013 (as well as lots of spambot deletions). The wiki status categories are quite subjective here on WikiIndex - more of an opinion rather than a definitive statement. If you can't register for an account there, maybe its edit mode should be changed to 'ByInvitation'. Keep up your awesome work here :)))) Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmintalk2HH 05:17, 5 May 2013 (PDT)

Sidebar problems

I've found a way to solve the sidebar problems instantly: just go to http://wikiindex.org/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Sidebar&action=purge and it works. Is there any way to make a shortcut or something? --YiFei | talk 15:32, 5 May 2013 (UTC)

OK, I've added a 'refresh sidebar' in the resources section. Can you see it, and does it work? Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmintalk2HH 11:23, 5 May 2013 (PDT)
The thing is, we won't see them when the sidebar is resettled. --YiFei | talk 22:44, 5 May 2013 (UTC)
Any other ideas? Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmintalk2HH 15:58, 5 May 2013 (PDT)
Actually, no. There's no places for us to place custom links other than the sidebar. (Unless you count the tabs, but that's for things related to the page.) :( --YiFei | talk 09:58, 6 May 2013 (UTC)
Can you do the M$ Windows equivalent of a forced refresh (Ctrl+F5) on an iPad? Maybe that might help. I actually think the entire MediaWiki install needs deleting off the server (after taking a database dump), and then a fresh re-install - because we have so many bugs in ours - but sadly, it looks like we don't have the appropriate back-end support. I enjoy you energy here on WikiIndex, best Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmintalk2HH 03:10, 6 May 2013 (PDT)
I can't. :( And I don't think we need a forced refresh, we just need to purge the site cache. --YiFei | talk 13:31, 6 May 2013 (UTC)
About the fresh reinstall, I've found that it may take a lot of time (especially Semantic MediaWiki). Maybe we can fix most of them by disabling cache. --YiFei | talk 13:35, 6 May 2013 (UTC)

Oh my God - I'm deeply touched by your kind thoughts and wishes. A huge big thank-you to you all.
As some of you may be aware (well I hope I mentioned it!), I was diagnosed with the dreaded 'big C' earlier this year (Renal Cell Carcinoma, or kidney cancer), and had to have major abdominal surgery. I'm still on a very slow and painful recovery (surgeon reckons 12 months to get over surgery!), but the real downer for me was the temporary loss of my eyesight (from some nasty medication for neuropathic pain). Vision is nearly back to normal, but my near vision still isn't correct, and eyes get tired easily - especially after using fone or computer. The surgeon also reckons I'm now clear of cancer - so I'm very relieved about that!
I've noticed a few changes here on WikiIndex (I hope for the better :p ), and the FavIcon looks great. I also noticed a couple of new Admins, which I hope are doing a great job here. Forgive me if I don't pick up on any new procedures, etc since my latest sabatical, and also please bear in mind I'll probably be on a 'go slow' on here for a while - I've got about 8 months of my life to catch up on, and SWMBO is best kept sweet, being as she's been caring for me since my op.
Once again, big thanks, and a big group hug (but don't squeeze too tight) - Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmintalk2HH 18:58, 22 October 2013 (UTC)

Wikis with wikiFactor between 5 and 9

Hi Sean, sorry to hear you've been suffering.

Some time ago you kindly split the Category "Wikis with wikiFactor between 2 and 4". I now have at least one supporter to split Category:Wikis with wikiFactor between 5 and 9 (see the talk page. Could I ask you to have a look at this, and if it seems appropriate, make the split?

Thanks, Ross Burgess (talk) 03:08, 13 June 2013 (PDT)

Hi, it's ✓ done now. Hope you're all right. Miss you very much. --YiFei | talk 09:51, 21 June 2013 (UTC)

Ratchetpedia

I'd like to bring the Ratchetpedia article to your attention, particularly the second paragraph of the 'history' section. It is a useless thing to add, should ever wiki document every vandalism attempts on them? Also it seems to call me out as a means of harassment. 122.150.167.84 08:38, 7 October 2013 (UTC)

OK, I've reverted the offensive edit. Whatever anyone's 'history' on other wikis, I personally don't think that WikiIndex is the place for such comments. Best regards (and don't forget to log-in next time :p ) - Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmintalk2HH 19:14, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
Some people seems to prefer to edit as anon, such as the one have several posts on my user talk page recently (having html, css and mediawiki syntax skills even better than some experienced editors (example: I never thought clear in css would cause {{TOCright}} to be impopular)). --YiFei | talk 10:21, 23 October 2013 (UTC)
Hi, it's me. I apologise, but my intention was not to do so many edits here. This is why I didn't create an account. The infobox which Template:Wiki generates uses a number of structured data fields - Wiki license is one of them. That means that anything other than the correct entries will fail the structured data. But they are utterly pointless! Does it REALLY matter if those fields are left blank? Do we (and I mean the miniscule number of regular WikiIndex editors - whom actually work (or try to) on the entire content of this wiki - nearly 20,000 articles) really want yet ANOTHER meaningless maintenance category? WikiIndex is NOT Wikipedia . . . we do NOT have the HUGE number of editors which Wikipedia can rely on to fix such maintenance issues. WikiNode has a really TINY uptake in wikilandia - maybe less than 1% of wikis listed on here actually have a WikiNode. And again, for the About - there are a very high proportion of MediaWiki wikis which havn't even bothered creating their own About page. What about all the other wiki engines which do not support the About link?
You have done some truely amazing and constructive work here on WikiIndex, and I doff my cap to you for that. But - and please don't take this the wrong way - you've also made a few mistakes on here, which at least one other editor here has advised you of. Again, I'm genuinely impressed by your energy and enthusiasm here - but sometimes you just need to take your foot off the gas pedal and try to look at the 'bigger picture' on some of your edits (especially when reverting 'good faith' edits of others). :-))))) Best and warmest regards Sean, aka Hoof Hearted ?Admin / 'Crat ?talk2HH 09:30, 30 October 2013 (UTC)

I just answered Template talk:Wiki#About parameter problem. I really don't think it's worth making a bot to search for About urls - firstly, it will only work with MediaWiki (and many MediaWiki about urls either don't exist, or have been spammed/deleted, etc), and wont work with any other wiki engine. We don't want to display an About link for a page which was previously spam and then deleted. And yes (as well as another). If you compare this diff - which shows the last stable revision from mid-May 2013 (before you had editing permissions on the template) to your last edit on 30 October 2013 - then apart from your constructive edits tidying up duplication, you needlessly first added a missing category switch to virtually every field, you then changed that to force create utterly needless semantic properties for those same fields. As I've previously stated, it is utterly POINTLESS trying to force articles here on WikiIndex into 'maintenance' categories (and even more pointless making a semantic property for a 'non-entity') for the many thousands of wikis which will never have say a WikiNode, or an about url, or a page count or wikiFactor. Sean, aka Hoof Hearted ?Admin / 'Crat ?talk2HH 15:35, 3 November 2013 (UTC)

Why does this matter to you?

Hi Sean, I am seeing friction between YiFei and your edits and I am not getting it. Look forward to your thoughts. Best, MarkDilley

Mark, see here, and the section immediately above in my talk page. And may I remind you that YiFei has created friction between at least two other WikiIndex sysops (and no doubt other sysops and editors) during my big C sabatical. I really don't want to be spending time here trying to fix numerous cock-ups to the MW namespace (which have knocked out WikiIndex access due to either database or config errors), nor trying to fix the nigh-on 40 un-needed semantic properties caused by blatant test editing to Template:Wiki.
Mark, you need to decide weather you want a harmonious community wiki here, or one where one editor winds up and pisses of many other long-standing editors & sysops here. Your call. Having cancer focusses the mind a little - I'm more than willing to continue helping out here, and trying to work with other sysops AND editors to improve WikiIndex for the benefit of ALL. But I am NOT willing to waste my rather precious time trying to fix what has become a testers playground. I'm certainly far from perfect - and have probably made my fair share of mistakes here - but the one crucial ethos I try to stick to is to work WITH other editors and sysops here, and not repeatedly piss off others! Best. Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 17:26, 6 November 2013 (UTC)
Allow me to butt in I'm only here because I see HH and YF frequently on Special:RecentChanges. I can tell that you both want this wiki to be a good resource and that you're both fairly smart. The Vault

Excuse me? Why in the world did you re-add the libel that I removed? Not only was it added by a well known hate-monger, but it is also completely baseless. Can you please provide your rationale for sanctioning such hate? 67.187.96.246 22:27, 14 December 2013 (UTC) I'll actually take this chance to elaborate:

  • "...as a result of totalitarian Wikia policies."
    • Ausir moved because he got a new job that payed more and allowed him a bit more freedom customizing. Most of the Administrators that left with him only did so because he was the face of the wiki at the time.
  • "Wikia maintains a copy..."
    • Wikia is not a copy of The Vault. We have existed since 2005, and those at The Vault have only been around for a couple of years. To copy is an action - In which Ausir and them took action in moving the information stored on our databanks over to Curse.
  • "...as part of their style of intimidation and control tactics over anyone who does not approve of their decisions."
    • Says who? I want to see your source for this. I have been on Nukapedia/The Vault since our beginning after leaving Duck and Cover. I can say with absolute certainty that this has never been an issue.
  • "Because The Vault followed up the problem, Wikia eventually changed the name of their original copy to Nukapedia."
    • This one pisses me off. We at Nukapedia freely allowed Ausir to take The Vault and its logo with him to Curse. We never fought him. We talked with Wikia about letting them. We were the ones that did everything in our power to make their transition easier.

Hi, and thanks for your comments. I made Cathopedia (de) into a red link simply because it should point to a wiki with the url de.cathopedia.org – which is a different wiki (and url) to Kathpedia.
Regarding your comment on Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Cathopedia/WikiFactor – I simply moved the original template over to Template:Cathopedia/wikiFactor – simply to be consistent with naming wikiFactor with a lower-case leading 'w'. I was then going to edit the affected articles – but my laptop was afflicted with the 'blue screen of death' – so that put a halt to my editing session. If no one else has fixed them, I'll resume where I left off. :p

Regarding Touhou Wiki

Hi there; I'm Mamizou, head steward of Touhou Wiki, responding to the query to DennouNeko regarding the wiki's past, specifically on Wikia.

Touhou Wiki itself originated as a subsection of the Touhou imageboard Pooshlmer around 2005 or so, and subsequently had been moved to Wikia by the owner of Pooshlmer (who on the wiki also had the username 'Pooshlmer') after a year or so. The wiki lived for awhile as 'touhou.wikia.com', and several other Touhou wikis in various language grew up around that (as subdomains of 'touhou.wikia.com'). At the point where Wikia began their changes, we decided to move everything to our own hosting, and did so with the blessing of 'Pooshlmer', who was still the head admin of the wiki. After the site move was completed around Nov-Dec 2010, Wikia staff (namely Sannse) refused to close the previous wikis down, and in the spring of 2011 a couple people were granted admin rights of the then-abandoned 'touhou.wikia.com'. One of said admins also proceeded to go around the rest of Wikia and remove legitimate links to the new Touhou Wiki and generally causing problems. So there's historically been a lot of bad blood between Touhou Wiki and the administration of Wikia and those they 'promote' to admins of the dead wikis. Since that point one of the other admins has tried to rework the aim of the previous wiki on Wikia as to not compete with Touhou Wiki after a good couple years of infighting, although I'm not exactly familiar with their success.

Anyway, I realize you're trying to document the splitting and moving of wikis off of Wikia, but understand that many other ex-Wikia wikis won't exactly be happy with getting associated with their zombie forms on Wikia, especially after the huge amounts of struggle and warring they had to endure with the Wikia staff.

Thanks. Mamizou (talk) 18:25, 30 December 2013 (UTC)

Hello Mamizou, and a huge thanks for your comments.
I really appreciate you taking time out to detail the history of the Touhou Wiki wikis. Maybe you would like to add this info to template:TouhouWiki. Best regards Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 22:29, 3 January 2014 (UTC)

Ensis Wiki

Do you happen to recognize, right off the bat, the wiki engine used by Ensis Wiki? If we knew that, we might be able to infer the RecentChanges URL too. Thanks, Leucosticte (talk) 10:07, 3 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi Nathan, and Happy New Year. Its urls confirm its written in PHP, bur it isn't the obvious PhpWiki, and I don't immediately recognise it! I suggest having a look at some of the other PHP-based wiki engines to see what looks similar. Sorry I can't be any more help. :-/ Best Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 14:35, 3 January 2014 (UTC)
Happy New Year to you too. Maybe it isn't even a wiki; maybe they just call themselves that because it sounds cool. Leucosticte (talk) 14:36, 3 January 2014 (UTC)
Maybe . . . however, at the foot of every page it states "All copyrights held by respective authors/owners", and on their main page, it states "Editing this Wiki is left in the hands of a select few volunteers, however you can help out. If you are an author you can submit documents for inclusion using the form on the contact page." Perhaps you can contact them and request an account? I guess it's likely not a real wiki as every page has their own php file? As for MediaWiki, every page is under "index.php" (or "pmwiki.php" for PmWiki) --YiFei | talk 15:09, 3 January 2014 (UTC)
Sometimes it's hard to figure out where to draw the line between a wiki and non-wiki website. See Differences between wikis and other kinds of websites. Leucosticte (talk) 15:54, 3 January 2014 (UTC)
Unless someone signs up for an account there, I suggest we leave the entry on here, but mark it with the {{NotAWiki}}. The only real way to tell if it's a genuine wiki is to search for page histories . . . . Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 22:33, 3 January 2014 (UTC)
