Category: Miraheze — this category here on WikiIndex contains wiki sites that are (or were) hosted by WikiTide Foundation, a not-for-profit wiki company (officially incorporated 15 July 2023) from Post Falls, ID in the United States, which provides and operates a MediaWiki wiki farm.^[1]

Overview

Miraheze, founded in July 2015^[1] and located at miraheze.org, is a free MediaWiki wiki farm, originally seeded from the now-defunct Orain wiki farm from Canada.

Miraheze commits to:

be free of charge;^[1]
have no advertising;^[1]
be 100% open source (code);
run the most recent version of MediaWiki,^[2] offering a competitive collection of optional extensions, including Semantic MediaWiki (SMW);
offer possibility for custom domains;
connect via HTTPS (SSL, or 'Secure Sockets Layer' connection) for all wiki sites;
a friendly volunteer community support, open to requests;
supplying the possibility to have VisualEditor and Flow.

Miraheze does not allow wiki founders to fully manage their own wiki sites (via the 'Special:ManageWiki' function, which itself depends upon the Extension:CreateWiki); tools such as Check user and Oversight are only used by Miraheze Stewards, as those are able reveal personal information. Any potential extension at Miraheze may be requested (Miraheze occasionally have a Community Wishlist Survey), but it will require a security review before being installed. Miraheze Stewards only intervene in local communities at the request of the community, or if there is vandalism on the wiki. Miraheze has the facility to make available all database dumps at Special:DataDump on each wiki site.

As of January 2023, Miraheze has a service status uptime of 99.16% during the previous twelve months.^[3]

Controversies

Announcement of closure

On 15 June 2023, the Board of Directors of Miraheze announced that the Miraheze service will be closed and cease to exist from 1 September 2023. With immediate effect, new wiki site creation was suspended, along with all uploads. All existing wiki sites will remain "operational for reading and editing activities" until 31 August 2023. From 1 September 2023, and following at least seven days notice period, all Miraheze activity will be withdrawn in its datacenter; by 1 October 2023, Miraheze will cease to exist as a wiki farm.^[4]

Miraheze is not shutting down

In response to the above announcement, various members of the Miraheze community rallied and developed a rescue plan to save it. A new non-profit corporation (hopefully with public charity status) is being created in the USA, and this will assume the assets of Miraheze Limited. Crucially, the Miraheze wiki farm will continue to operate as normal by the outgoing board.^[5]
