- Note: this top-tier 'parent category' or 'mother category' should be empty of article pages; Wiki location, and other appropriate articles, should only be listed in the below sub-categories.
Category: Wiki location — this category here on WikiIndex is the root node (or top tier) for attempts to describe wiki sites in terms of their geographic scope. Categorizing a wiki with one of the available sub-categories should be a significant way of answering the question: where is the wiki relevant?
Here are the main, primary sub-categories that are intended to be here for specific reasons:
- Category: Earth — this is the root node of a tree of locations that get more and more specific as you descend the category tree. Have a wiki about something in London? It should NOT go in Earth, Europe, United Kingdom, or England... (unless the wiki also specifically covers those or any other higher level categories); but if you follow that chain of sub-categories you'll find a category for London... which is the right place for London-only specific wikis.
- Category: City — some of the first real 'governments' were by and for cities. Cities are economically, linguisitically, and geographically meaningful, in a way many other 'kinds of locations' are not. Wikis about cities (of which there are many) deserve this special category.
- Category: New York — this is here because it is a bad category. Any pages in this category were put there by someone who didn't realize there was a New York State or a New York City category that was more appropriate. Putting it here makes it easy to find and correct these mistakes (try checking this category yourself and recategorize anything you find there).
- Category: Places — this category was being slowly dismantled according to a plan on it's talk page. Maybe, it will eventually be deleted. You can help by checking out the talk page and then finding pages and categories that don't fit the scheme it offers. However, there is a more recent train of thought that would like to keep this specific category (for locations which are not confined to or restricted by physical geography, such as stadiums, national parks... ).
