Wikispecies is an open, free directory of species. The goal of the wiki is to become an extensive database for taxonomy as a tool for biologists.
As of March 2006, Wikispecies has versions in 32 different languages, and by October 2012, that has increased to 67 languages. However, unlike the multilingual conventions of other Wikimedia Foundation projects, all Wikispecies language versions are sub-pages of the primary 'species.wikimedia.org' domain, similar to Wikimedia Commons. As of October 2011, Wikimedia Meta-Wiki reports there are over 300,000 articles on Wikispecies.
