Originating from users and staff of the FANDOM Fallout Wiki Nukapedia, the group of users decided to fork into independence in response to many of the decisions and policies the parent company, FANDOM, had put in place over the years. It was subsequently founded on April 8, 2022 and entered early access on October 23, 2022.
History
In 2021, Kid Aces served as a bureaucrat for Nukapedia. She introduced many beneficial changes to Nukapedia that included removing misinformation, head-canon and poorly written articles. Many believed these changes to be "stomping on creativity" and that they negatively impacted the wiki's SEO (Search Engine Optimization), which caused the archived wiki, The Vault, to trump the wiki in search results. She led a clean up of the Nukapedia Discord to make it LGBTQ+ friendly and welcoming for all.

Many of FANDOM and Nukapedia's own decisions were viewed as actively hostile towards the community. FANDOM wikis are host to intrusive advertisements and trackers that greatly affect performance, leading to an overall unsatisfactory user experience. Many new features introduced by FANDOM are often pushed without community feedback. FANDOM forces users to use their site-wide skin, FANDOMDesktop, providing no options for alternatives. Custom javascript and wiki-side features often need to be approved by FANDOM, which have been known to have been removed without warning. Misinformation and head-canon have been known to spread on FANDOM wikis, Nukapedia being no different; a fact which has been criticized by the community for many years.
On April 1, 2022, she was demoted on Nukapedia and globally banned from FANDOM for a year. FANDOM, in the past and recently, have been criticized for banning wiki staff for invalid reasons and without warning. Believing the ban to be entirely unjust, rather than appealing, her and Eckserah, Nukapedia's technical lead, began discussing the idea of an independent wiki. On April 7, 2022, the Discord, then called "Project Shmodex", was created, and on April 8, 2022, the Independent Fallout Wiki was officially founded. Eckserah handled all technical aspects of the wiki fork, while Kate handled the wiki editing spectrum. As an inside joke, the Discord was renamed to "Schmault-Tec".

Independence has allowed the Independent Fallout Wiki to "forge their own path", making decisions and policies that ensure head-canon, misinformation and non-objective writing remains prohibited. The wiki believes that its content is of high standards; articles that match the criteria above are rewritten and replaced swiftly to reflect these standards. The wiki is extremely inclusive and accepting towards the LGBTQ+, GSRM, MOGAI, Plural and Otherkin communities, with many staff members and users participating in these communities.
Many Nukapedia users, editors and staff resigned to join the new one out of solidarity. Findabair joined her as a bureaucrat. In the following months, to attain help, the wiki began conversing with other wiki independent communities, such as the NIWA, Halopedia and the Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages. On May 27, 2022, the Mod space was introduced, designed to cater to modders and to allow Fallout mods to have dedicated pages. In early June, all content from Nukapedia was successfully forked over. On October 27, 2022, the Community space was created, allowing fanon content such as fanfiction, fan art, screenshots, artwork, PnP documents and Fallout 76 C.A.M.P. pages.

It runs on the MediaWiki wiki engine, and contains no advertising. It is not-for-profit and funded entirely by the site admin, Kid Aces.
On October 23, 2022, the wiki officially entered early access, opening registration to new users. On October 28, 2022, C0NN1E joined the team as a community ambassador and editor.

On October 27, 2022, the Community space was created, allowing fanon content such as fanfiction, fan art, screenshots, artwork, PnP documents and Fallout 76 C.A.M.P. pages.

On October 23, 2022, the wiki officially entered early access, opening registration to new users. On October 28, 2022, C0NN1E joined the team as a community ambassador and editor. She reached out to The Doom Wiki and Combine OverWiki to discuss wiki affiliations, which were officially completed that same month. StrategyWiki, Halopedia and the Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages later followed suit in early November. On November 28, 2022, the wiki hosted its first mod, Vault 120. On December 1, 2022, the wiki was voted in as a member of the Gaming Wiki Network, becoming the largest member of the network. On December 19, 2022, JoJo's Bizarre Encyclopedia joined as an affiliate.

The wiki prides itself in being independent, and has introduced many new policies and changes designed stomp out misinformation, head-canon and flowery non-objective writing. The community is described as being extremely inclusive towards the LGBTQ+, GSRM, MOGAI, Plural and Otherkin communities, to which it welcomes with open arms. Many site staff and users identify within these communities.

The wiki runs on the MediaWiki wiki engine, and contains no advertising. It is not-for-profit and funded entirely by the site admin, Kid Aces.
