The Historical Hastings website is for the history of Hastings, Sussex, England, in the United Kingdom (UK). It started as a mapping website, hence the 'HistoryMap' domain-name, but it grew into a wiki-based website that is used as a research tool. The mapping functionality is still retained in the website, and is gradually being increased, with categorized sections (for example farms, or cinemas) which incorporate maps which show features that are referenced within the website. Funding for the website is entirely voluntary, and any funds that are raised via donations or advertizements that are shown on the website are utilized solely for hosting costs. The research and content is provided by a small team of volunteers. When the wiki was originally created, all visitors were welcome to make corrections, and to add personal or family histories to existing pages, without requiring an account, (aka an open edit wiki). However, as of January 2022, the wiki was changed to require all prospective edittors to request an account, thereby rendering the wiki-website to ByInvitation.
For a relatively new wiki-website, it is great to see the popular pages facility retained by way of the HitCounters extension from MediaWiki, becuz this provides the current data-output that is required for its wikiFactor (wF) value.
