Any reason for you not to be a sysop? I'd be happy to make you one. TedErnst | talk 18:19, 18 September 2006 (EDT)

Well, if you overlook the long periods where neglect WikiIndex, punctuated by brief periods where I obsessively make mis-guided edits ... and my questionable code of ethics ... Sure, why not? :-) --DavidCary 21:52, 22 September 2006 (EDT)

etwas Deutsch zur Abwechslung[edit]

Hallo David, sag mal, was ist deine Zeitzone? --Wolf | talk 16:53, 11 October 2007 (EDT)

Mein Zeitzone ist UTC - 5 ("Tulsa time"). Warum? --DavidCary 17:06, 11 October 2007 (EDT)
--Wolf | talk 17:22, 11 October 2007 (EDT)

adding new wikis plan - and idea for collaboration[edit]

Hi David, seeing Peu's frustrated message (cuz I was going to add a bunch to the page :-) - I thought, maybe I could do something about my guilt and organize a time (an hour) to work with you and whoever else wants to put a dent into WikiProject:Wikis to Add. You up for a hour together on the wiki, maybe on skype or irc too? Peu or anyone else, interested? Best, MarkDilley

Sounds like a great idea. I am under the impression that I can just take a few wiki off that list and create new pages for them, without any collaboration needed. Is there something specific we need to coordinate? --DavidCary 00:18, 15 February 2008 (EST)
I'm still interested in the project, I'll do my best transforming entries into article stubs. Unfortunately my time is currently very limited, nonetheless please keep me up-to-date. --Wolf | talk 07:14, 15 February 2008 (EST)
David, you have the technical part right! :-) - I am interested in a social part, like a mini barn raising on these, say we choose a few hours to work together, or a day, and count how many we have been able to add? Trying to get up my energy for tackling the problem. Wolf Peuker suggests that we not add more to this list and I have dozens more in my bookmark folder to add... Just and idea to create something. Best, MarkDilley

Excellent. Certainly I agree with Peu that it is better to have a full page on each wiki, rather than a one-liner in the WikiProject:Wikis to Add. And if we could motivate people to do that, then that would be the best all around.

On the other hand, I suspect that if we discourage people from adding to "Wikis to Add", then those people will keep that information to themselves. In something called a "bookmark folder". Just a hunch I have. Then when I search WikiIndex for a wiki on some topic, I won't find anything at all :-(.

When searching for some topic, I'd rather at least find a one-line mention of that topic in the "Wikis to Add" page, then I can be happy that I've found other wiki-positive people who share my interest in that topic :-). It's certainly much less work for me to take a link off the "Wikis to Add" page and create a page for it, than to hack into Mark Dilley's bookmark folder to find it and *then* create a page for it :-).

I'm no expert, but perhaps there is a better way to motivate and encourage ourselves and other people to:

  • take one wiki at a time off the list on that page, and create a page for it.

What exactly is stopping people from doing that now?

<brainstorming>

  • Perhaps few people know about that page? -> perhaps we could mention it more prominently ... somewhere ... (It's already mentioned on the Community Portal).
  • Perhaps people are scared to edit a page once it gets above a certain size? -> somehow chop it up into smaller, less-overwhelming pieces ...
  • Perhaps people don't know the right process for taking a wiki off that list and making a fresh page for it? -> somehow write better, friendlier, easier to understand instructions?
  • Perhaps people do know the right process, but it seems like a lot of work? Or it requires several steps including X and Y, and some people don't feel comfortable doing X, while others don't feel comfortable doing Y? -> somehow Break it up into smaller steps, encourage people -- especially newbies -- to find some task they feel comfortable doing, make a little forward progress at a time, and make it easy for others to pick up where the last person left off.
  • Perhaps the process of creating a really good page about a wiki requires both X, Y, and Z, but lots of pages are stalled out waiting for Y? -> perhaps, somehow encourage more people to do more Y work. Make it easy for obsessive-compulsives to plow through a whole lot of repetitive Y work for many different wiki. Give people little pictures of barnstars or chocolate-chip cookies when they achieve significant amounts of Y work. Make it a game.
  • Some other reason? ...
  • ...? -> Or is there something better we could do?

</brainstorming>

OK, that's enough of me rambling on *about* the problem, rather than actually *doing* something productive. --DavidCary 17:41, 25 February 2008 (EST)

measuring wiki size[edit]

Hi, I have a quick question. When measuring a wikis size, do we go by total pages? (I.e. all the talk pages included) or just articles? Thanks. - JacjohncolesTalk|Contribs 19:44, 12 September 2008 (EDT)

Does the discussion at WikiIndex talk:WikiProject - By Size answer your question?
For wiki that use the MediaWiki software, I think we are currently only including articles, not including talk pages or redirects or user pages.

Request for neutral admin[edit]

Hello, I have already asked User:Comets to help with this issue, but he has not responded. Perhaps you can help.

We need the assistance of a neutral admin to help decide the direction of Conservapedia, RationalWiki, and The Conservapedia RationalWiki war. As it stands, all three articles are being edited almost exclusively by editors of RationalWiki, a site started to criticize Conservapedia. As such, all three articles are just an extended criticism of Conservapedia. As I am associated with Conservapedia (but not exactly a huge fan), I would ask that you look over the articles and decide what, if any, criticism is acceptable according to the standards of this website.

Thanks, JazzMan 17:11, 21 November 2008 (EST)

I've left a few comments on the WikiIndex talk pages corresponding to the above wiki, and also at Category talk:Active administrators of this wiki#Conservapedia, RationalWiki etc.
Is the current compromise acceptable to everyone? If so, then it's time to take down the "Edit Warring" box from these WikiIndex articles. --DavidCary 11:47, 24 November 2008 (EST)
Thanks for your help. I think (fingers crossed) that the edit-warring should be done now. JazzMan 14:46, 24 November 2008 (EST)

right to vanish[edit]

...

She's sent me an email asking for all traces of her to disappear. I think that can be done. — User:Sean Fennel@ 01:01, 21 June 2009 (EDT)
Sean, I've put the {{delete}} template on her user pages, and in a week or so I'll delete them.

...

I wish that when someone asked "Please help", there is something more productive and friendly that we could do -- other than delete all evidence that person was ever here (MeatBall: RightToVanish).
And in this particular case, I worry that a few minor mistakes by WikiIndex regulars will lead to a news reporter getting an incorrect understanding of wiki.
... --DavidCary 05:39, 21 June 2009 (EDT)

... this section ... I suggest deleteing it after a day or two when people connected with this wiki have had a chance to see it. Proxima Centauri 13:18, 14 July 2009 (EDT)

I respect this one's desire to vanish from this wiki. I hope someday this one will choose to return to wiki, and become a respected contributor to this and other wiki.
Done. --DavidCary 17:17, 18 July 2009 (EDT)

Block[edit]

I blocked an unregistered user because the user made unpleasant or harrassing comments about someone else in the deleted article, Dave muistaine. I don't know if it was friendly teasing or a serious attempt to blacken someone's reputation but I feel the rule should be that when aparently inocent third parties are involved the accused should not get the benifit of any doubt. In any case this wiki isn't here for schoolkids or childish adults to call others names. It seems this is Dave Mustaine, I don't like his music but I'm not sure we should let people insult him here. Proxima Centauri 13:43, 24 June 2009 (EDT)

Yes, this looks like a childish grade-school insult. I agree that such things should be immediately deleted, and the person who said it banned for a short time. But I have hopes that such children will soon learn that such things are unacceptable, and learn to be productive -- and so I don't want to ban them forever. On the other hand, spammers who flood a page with dozens of off-topic links -- I am tempted to ban them forever. However, I don't want to unnecessarily block innocent users who use dynamic IP addresses that were once used by a spammer. I would appreciate your thoughts on which actions should trigger a ban, and for how long, at WikiIndex:Blocking and banning policy. --DavidCary 20:07, 7 July 2009 (EDT)

Huw Powell[edit]

User:Huw Powell is stirring things up and harming this wiki, if I weren't personally involved I would warn him or block him, I suspect Peu will come back sooner if Powell stays away. Proxima Centauri 13:47, 2 July 2009 (EDT)

You are stirring up trouble and harming this wiki. And now that one administrator has already declined to join you in your personal vendetta, you're running away for help from other administrator. Maybe you should listen to Peu?

I thought I'd draw your attention to User:Jonah Musto and User talk:Jonah Musto, you may want to do the Google search yourself. Proxima Centauri 05:25, 28 July 2009 (EDT)

User:Jonah Musto has been blocked for six months after repeat vandalism which ordinary users cleared up. I’ve also had this experience of trying to sort out vandalism on wikis where I’m not a sysop and it’s very frustrating. See, User talk:Proxima Centauri#User:Jonah Musto I wish I’d blocked him for longer the first time he got blocked. Proxima Centauri 14:55, 19 August 2009 (EDT)

I've blocked another likely sockpuppet of JM and deleted more copyright images of ceiling fans. We need to patrol this wiki often at the moment but too much discussion feeds trolls. Proxima Centauri 15:02, 20 August 2009 (EDT)

Thank you for blocking the apparent sockpuppet. I think the approach of blocking for a short time, then blocking for longer times, is entirely appropriate.
I wish there was some way to encourage this person to focus that energy into something more useful. --DavidCary 16:10, 20 August 2009 (EDT)

Nope. Well, I mean, I like the *idea* of a standardized welcome template Template:Welcome. But even I can see glitches in this rough draft, as most people can see glitches in almost any rough draft. RationalWiki[edit]

I threatened to block Phantom Hoover because I feel this user is harassing me across wikis. Further people need to know where criticism of Conservapedia can be found now that RationalWiki is down and the Hoover removed this information. Proxima Centauri 15:18, 22 August 2009 (EDT)

Wikipedia has a rule that sysops should not block in cases where they are in dispute, and this works well for a giant wiki with over a thousand sysops. It doesn't work so well for a small wiki with a few overworked sysops. Further, I feel I understand the situation over Conservapedia and its critics and I feel the information that Phantom Hoover removed should stay at least until RationalWiki is running again. Proxima Centauri 15:33, 22 August 2009 (EDT)

User:Nx has been blocked for 3 days. He has no excuse for not knowing that he shouldn't remove content from pages as he edited User talk:Phantom Hoover where there is a warning. Proxima Centauri 15:45, 23 August 2009 (EDT)

These two users are deliberately trolling and being rude, on many wikis both would be blocked for this type of rudeness to an administrator. Proxima Centauri 15:48, 23 August 2009 (EDT)

Nx and I have done nothing but clean up the mess you left behind. Phantom Hoover 15:50, 23 August 2009 (EDT)
On many wikis you wouldn't be an administrator after this kind of thing. I have justified my removal's of content. I did not remove meaningful content, in fact I added the backup thing instead of a quote. I am not trolling. 65.60.53.250 15:52, 23 August 2009 (EDT)
Yeah, but it's clear that this place has fairly incompetent administration anyway, given that they sysopped her in the first place. Phantom Hoover 15:56, 23 August 2009 (EDT)

"Shoo, and go back to pretending you have power on Liberapedia, rather than pimping it on sites which matter. Phantom Hoover 15:09, 23 August 2009 (EDT)

Ignore the inhospitableness of Proxima Centauri, seeing as how she's running to other sysops for reassurance, I'm sure she can't do much. Nx 15:19, 23 August 2009 (EDT)

Yaay! Where did she run for reassurance? Phantom Hoover 15:34, 23 August 2009 (EDT)
Found it. Why do I feel that she comprises half the comments here? Phantom Hoover 15:37, 23 August 2009 (EDT)"

The rudeness above is copied from User talk:Phantom Hoover and I'm tired of that type of thing. Proxima Centauri 16:20, 23 August 2009 (EDT)

You threatened a block instead of welcoming me; I don't exactly call that polite. Moreover, you blocked Nx, who had only removed incorrect information, for three freaking days. Phantom Hoover 16:24, 23 August 2009 (EDT)
(ec) Rude, that? Which part, that you were inhospitable? Isn't that true: you reverted an editor on sight without any explanation, then threatened him with a block. Then you reverted and blocked me without warning and justification. I have sent emails to Mr. Ernst and Mr. Stanton, and I hope one of them will reply. Also, I won't lower myself to your level and block you at RationalWiki, but I will remove your sysop rights there as you are clearly incapable of using these powers properly, as you have demonstrated before. 76.73.76.122 16:27, 23 August 2009 (EDT)

SlideWiki is restored. Thanks to your signaled interest[edit]

Hello David, thanks to your friendly interest, Meatball:SlideWiki on SeedWiki is back. I left a link there, said a public thank you to you and KennethTyler in Meatball:RecentChanges. I would love to transfer this domain free of charge to you, your friends or anybody interested, in the sense of FreeGainSharing as part of the SocialDomaining experiment, which itself is part of our grassroot WikiNomics initiative. --Fridemar 12:20, 3 December 2009 (EST) FridemarPache

I see that the Slidewiki is now back online at http://seedwiki.com/wiki/slidewiki/ . Yay! I hope that http://SlideWiki.net/ will soon point to it.

The ExtremeOpenBusiness sounds like a fascinating experiment. What would you like me to do?

Thank you for offering SlideWiki.net domain name to me. I am flattered that you trust me to put it to good use. But I honestly don't know what I need to do to accept it. I suppose I could write you a check. Or I could send you a payment through PayPal. Or I could offer to trade one of my domains for it, such as http://visualwiki.org/ . And then what? As of 2009, nearly all my experience with domain names is buying domains that I intend to use myself, buying domains that do not yet exist, directly through a domain name registrar. As of 2009, I never bought a pre-existing domain, so I'm a little fuzzy on the process. --DavidCary 20:03, 12 March 2010 (EST)

Hallo David, just noticed your message here via Meatball. You could have SlideWiki.net transferred by FreeGainsharing as depicted in https://aboutus.org/FreeGainSharing, https://aboutus.org/SocialDomaining and https://aboutus.org/2pen.org (abstracting from the fixed price offer there). If you enter the WikiConversation in one of the above aboutus.org pages, I get an email-notification. (Currently Meatball appears to be defunct (at least) for me, and this in edit- as well as in discussion-mode. If you happen to see Mark, give him a friendly nudge to remind him, that I am waiting for his response).

Accept suggestion to sell the domain slidewiki.net as SocialDomaining via OpenBusiness[edit]

David, thank you for appreciating the concept and the domain. For simplifying the procedure, I suggest, that you open a free domain-account at http://namePros.com, to which I can transfer the domain slidewiki.net nearly immediately (without the delays, that can occur on external domain transfers).

To authentify, that you are the right David, and in accordance to your suggestion to consider a payment, I ask you to send me 50USD via my paypal-frontstore and would love to help you in the wiki to start our common mindchild.

If this is too much money, feel free to suggest another price. I would love to make the transaction an instance of WikiPedia:OpenBusiness ( an article, which I edited in the last days). --Fridemar 10:07, 13 April 2010 (EDT)

wiki.GIS.com on WikiIndex[edit]

Just in case you missed my response on wiki.GIS.coms' Discussion Room, I wanted to say thank you for linking/listing us within the WikiIndex. As I find time, I will go in and edit the current content to reflect on our wiki and what we are trying to accomplish as well as what we are all about. --Collin July 27, 2010

Not sure I get it[edit]

Why you moved wiki.GIS.com to geographic information system wiki. Best, MarkDilley

get it now

Two well-meaning people independently created these two pages, both of them pointing to the same URL (and therefore the same wiki). Redundant. So I merged all the text onto one page. I wasn't sure which name was better, so I picked the one with the oldest history on WikiIndex. Then left the other page as a redirect. Feel free to move the merged page to the other name if you think it is better.

I'm a little worried that this wiki will be added to WikiIndex a few dozen more times, because when I search for "GIS" from the WikiIndex search box, I come up empty, leading to the (false) conclusion that this wiki is not already listed in the WikiIndex. --DavidCary 22:10, 6 August 2010 (EDT)

thank you for the further clarification, will try to make an edit to see if GIS issue can be bludgeoned. :-) Best, MarkDilley

LexingtonWiki Feedback[edit]

I appreciate your feedback and input on the LexingtonWiki. I am honored that you visited and equally embarrassed that you had difficulty. We recently upgraded to MediaWiki v1.17 and catastrophe befell us. Overnight one night last week we installed the upgrade and spent eight hours attempting to perfect the configuration. When I returned some hours later, I was not permitted to log in. The system rejects me as it did you. As I am unfamiliar with MediaWiki and (to a certain extent) Php, I don't know how to fix it.

Again, thank you for your visit, my apologies for the glitch and a promise to let you know when I get it fixed! --ScottSchaefer 10:00, 25 September 2011 (PDT)

WARNING - David, forgive me for butting in - but I need to alert you to the fact that User:ScottSchaefer is basically a spammer! Virtually all of his edits here on WikiIndex primarilly contain URLs to his own external sites - including his commercial blog and his commercial site for website design (which also offers SEO optimisation) - they contain NO 'internal' WikiIndex wikilinks. Yes, granted, he has created an entry on here called LexingtonWiki - but that too (on here) was full of external URLs - primarily relating to his own commercial enterprises, rather than any actual content on his 'wiki'. Finally, looking directly at his LexingtonWiki - it is both plagued by spam (including the usual medications for 'erectile dysfunction'), along with many entries blatantly copied and pasted directly from the English Wikipedia (presumably to somehow 'boost' his viability of his 'web sites' by inflating his page count).
I personally would recommend leaving the LexingtonWiki article on here (it is afterall a viable wiki - albeit an extremely unethical one!) - but block User:ScottSchaefer - on the grounds that he tried to use WikiIndex to blatantly peddle spam by subversively inserting non-wiki URLs into a wide range of articles (primarily userpages, sub-userpages, talkpages and images). Just my recommendation - and although I may only be a 'regular editor' (rather than a sysop), I hope you can agree that I have been a trustworthy editor, and one which is making an active and positive contribution to WikiIndex - by both improving articles, and improving 'housekeeping' of templates, categories and the likes. That wiki is hosted on Wikia. Its sysop created a "The ACC Bible Quizzing Wiki" page on WikiIndex linking to that quizzing wiki. After its sysop later changed his mind and asked us to delete that WikiIndex page (see User talk:MarkDilley/Archive5#ACC Bible Quizzing Wiki and User talk:Joel amos), and confirming that on that quizzing wiki itself, we did what he asked -- we deleted our WikiIndex page about that wiki. --DavidCary (talk) 09:45, 24 April 2015 (PDT)
