The '''Independent Fallout Wiki''' is a wiki dedicated to documenting all aspects of the ''Fallout'' series. The wiki forked forked from the Fandom Fallout wiki on April 8, 2022. The wiki, on top of offering documentation for all game content, also offers a community section, for fan works and in-game screenshots, and a mod section, for documenting various ''Fallout'' game modifications.

The Independent Fallout Wiki is a wiki site dedicated to documenting all aspects of the Fallout series of video games. It opened on 31 December 2022.

History

This Independent Fallout Wiki site forked off the existing Nukapedia, when Fandom staff decided to temporarily ban two of the Nukapedia administrators without warning in April 2022, for reasons that many in the community considered unjust and unprecedented at the time. Soon after, multiple editors started to discuss leaving the platform. Several options were considered, including moving to another third-party host such as Miraheze; but ultimately, it was decided to go to fully independent hosting. On 7 April 2022, the Discord, then called 'Project Shmodex', was created. On 8 April 2022, the Independent Fallout Wiki was officially founded by Kid Aces and Eckserah. As an inside joke, the Discord was then renamed to 'Schmault-Tec'. On 9 April 2022, the Fallout.wiki domain was officially registered.[1]

Several users joined the newly founded Independent Fallout Wiki site out of solidarity. In the following months, to attain guidance and help, the wiki site began conversing with other independent wiki communities, such as the Nintendo Independent Wiki Alliance (NIWA), Halopedia, and the Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages. On 27 May 2022, the Mod space was introduced, designed to cater to modders and to allow Fallout modifications to have dedicated pages.[2] In early June, all content from Nukapedia was successfully forked and imported into Independent Fallout Wiki. On 27 October 2022, the Community space was created, allowing fanon content such as fan fiction, fan art, screenshots, artwork, PnP documents, and Fallout 76 C.A.M.P. pages.[3]

On 23 October 2022, Independent Fallout Wiki officially entered early access, opening registration to new users.[4] The wiki reached out to The Doom Wiki and Combine OverWiki to discuss wiki affiliations, which were officially completed that same month.[5][6] StrategyWiki, Halopedia, and the Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages later followed suit in early November.[7][8] On 28 November 2022, the wiki site hosted its first mod, Vault 120.[9] On 1 December 2022, Independent Fallout Wiki was voted in as a member of the Gaming Wiki Network (GWN), as a result, becoming the largest member of GWN.[10] On 19 December 2022, JoJo's Bizarre Encyclopedia joined as an affiliate.[11] Independent Fallout Wiki officially opened on 31 December 2022.[12][13]

Also on 31 December, the wiki site introduced a featured fan art program dubbed 'Pickman's Gallery', as a reference to a character in Fallout 4.[14] On 16 February 2023, Independent Fallout Wiki was voted in as an affiliate of the Square Enix Independent Wiki Alliance (SEIWA).[15] On 28 February 2023, GECK Wiki officially joined as an affiliate to the wiki.[16] On 1 March 2023, the wiki Twitter account surpassed 1,000 followers.[17]

Independent Fallout Wiki prides itself in being independent, and has introduced many new policies and changes to aid in the removal of head-canon and common misinformation. The community is described as having "love for LGBTQ / GSRM / plural / otherkin" communities, and that "everyone is welcome".[18] Many site staff and users identify within these communities.

The Independent Fallout Wiki site is powered by the ubiquitous MediaWiki (MW) wiki engine, together with the Semantic MediaWiki (SMW) extension. The wiki site contains no advertising, and is not-for-profit.
