Category: Read-only — the wiki sites listed in this read-only edit-mode category here on WikiIndex can not be edited by anyone; except the wiki sites' system operators (SysOps). These wiki sites deny users the one thing that makes wikis special. Despite the 'wiki' format and wiki software, they effectively function like a conventional website, where users are only able to read someone else's opinion. Users can not change anything that they feel is wrong or factually incorrect, or add anything that they know or feel can improve the site; however, some read-only wiki sites may be facilitate direct contact to the SysOps via e-mail offering suggestions or alterations to content on existing articles.

Many people, including folks here at WikiIndex think these wiki sites listed in this category are not true to the fundamental spirit or ethos of wikis! In fact, SwitchWiki (the predecessor to WikiIndex) only listed open-edit wiki sites. However, there may be very valid reasons why a wiki is set to read-only; one such scenario may be a wiki which was created as an editable wiki for a forthcoming conference or similar event, and then 'locked' to read-only following the conclusion of said conference. Other reasons for read-only wiki sites could be when the original scope or subject matter has shifted away, the owner of the wiki has abandoned due to personal reasons, or the wiki just wants to be preserved as an archive, maybe as a result of moving to different wiki software.
