Hello

Welcome to WikiIndex, and thanks for your recent edits. I am trying to understand the reason for this edit. Was your discovery of this bug as a result of trying to create a new article using the Form:Wiki? Best regards, --Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmintalk2HH 06:39, 30 March 2013 (PDT)

In Form:Wiki source it says that we can type no to tell the Template:Wiki that there aren't any node in the wiki. But every time I used the form, it didn't accept no. I thought the type string would accept it, so I made the edit. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 18:10, 30 March 2013 (PDT)

Spam fighting / user name space

Hi - thanks for flagging up all them spam edits. If you see another flood like this, and don't see any sysops deleting it, message any of us which are online to deal with it.

And would you like to add something about yourself in your own name space - such as languages you speak or your timezone? Best regards, and thanks again :) Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmintalk2HH 08:14, 12 April 2013 (PDT)

You're welcome.--Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 08:36, 12 April 2013 (PDT)
Thank you for flagging spam. As someone who despises spam, your help is greatly appreciated. Arcane (talk) 20:09, 30 April 2013 (PDT)Arcane

Redirects

Hi again. Can you please refrain from creating hard redirects to non-WikiIndex articles? That means no redirects to other sites such as Wikimedia, Uncyclomedia or Wikia wikis, etc. Redirects should only be used for existing articles or categories here on WikiIndex. If there is a real need to link to offsite wikis, we specifically use the interwiki table. Best regards, Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmintalk2HH 04:30, 14 April 2013 (PDT)

OK, I'll find where they are requested by, and fix them. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 04:53, 14 April 2013 (PDT)
Fixed. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 04:57, 14 April 2013 (PDT)

Logos

Hi - great work with your logo hunting. Can I please ask that you don't change an internal wikilink to an external url hotlink if the logos are identical - as you did with this edit here. Also, feel free to upload any new or updated logos if you are able to (I often hotlink when there is no existing logo because I'm too lazy sometimmes to upload! - but we really ought to upload every logo).

I'm also impressed with your overall knowledge of MediaWiki ... what other wikis are you involved with? Best regards, and keep up your great work :-))) Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmintalk2HH 10:43, 24 April 2013 (PDT)

First, the logos aren't identical (File:Wikipedia.png is dimmer and the Chinese character is 祖 not 维). See History of Wikipedia#Evolution of logo. Second, I'm also involved in LifeWiki (active about a month ago), Powder Toy Wiki (maybe no edit), WikiApiary (joined recently), MediaWiki.org (some edits) and some other Wikimedia Foundation wikis including Wikipedia (few edits). Also, I'm sometimes not able to upload because I'm using an iPad. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 03:03, 25 April 2013 (PDT)
Thanks for the link on the evolution of the Wikipedia logo. I now understand why you've been changing them. Maybe we can still keep the old logo by floating a thumbnail on the left side of the article - as per this template edit. Best Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmintalk2HH 13:02, 1 May 2013 (PDT)

Appreciate your effort here!

Many thanks! Do you have a first name to go by, i.e. Hoof Hearted is Sean? I am a big advocate of real names but not forcing them, just asking :-) Best, MarkDilley

OK. --YiFei | talk 00:18, 30 April 2013 (PDT)

Template:WikiStatus

Are you able to add some Chinese translation to the new Archive section of the Template:WikiStatus please? :)) Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmintalk2HH 11:54, 30 April 2013 (PDT)

Subst vs transcluded templates

Hi YiFei, couple of points. 1) we are no where any size that Wikipedia is and so from a technological and spam point of view, I don't think it is an issue there. 2) My main point is to have the wiki look as clean as it can, and yes, that is especially at an editing the page level. I think that date stamps and all the other colors, formatting in signatures is problematic - to me it is noise and adds no value to the wiki. Yes you are talking to a pre-Wikipedia person :-) So, I was playing with the idea of moving all the "stuff" into signatures to clean up the wiki. Best, MarkDilley

Hi. What if the templates like Template:HoofHearted is spammed? Is there any way to protect is so that only Sean could edit it? --YiFei | talk 18:00, 4 May 2013 (PDT)

It could be protected just for sysops - consider this course of action. Doing the easiest next step. In this case, seeing if it becomes a spam target. My guess is that we won't have to worry about it. Also, I don't think the timestamp can be transcluded, which is a problem for some folks. I am ok with no action or shared action on this. :-) Best, MarkDilley

It can be substituted, but not transcluded. See Template:YiFei --YiFei | talk 05:39, 5 May 2013 (UTC)

I'm not sure why you are both trying to re-invent the wheel? The default MediaWiki signature generator is the most secure method of generating a signature - and it is how all other MediaWiki installations do it. And I'm also not sure why there is seemingly apparent denial of the very real spam problem from Mark! Finally, I really don't get why Mark is trying to 'clean up the wiki' - signatures with timestamps is the way MediaWiki works - and that is exactly how the millions of existing MediaWiki users will be familiar with. Mark, if you really don't like how MediaWiki works, then maybe it is time to either shut down WikiIndex, or move it back to a more prehistoric wiki engine. A lot of effort is being wasted here .... maybe time for me to check-out - just like the many other valuable past contributors to this site! ://// Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmintalk2HH 03:42, 5 May 2013 (PDT)

I am not trying to reinvent the wheel, as you say Sean, merely exploring how to make a cleaner wiki. Which is what I have been doing here since 2006 and you since 2011. I do not understand your frustration here, I have not been heavy handed about anything. I am not denying a spam problem here either. I uses the signature generator - and when I have had fancy signatures I have used {{MarkDilley}}. You are right Sean, I don't like how MediaWiki works - one time I was having lunch with Brion Vibber, a main MediaWiki developer, and we were complaining how MediaWiki was a good wiki for the encyclopedia but very bloated for pretty much every other wiki instance. I do understand that many public wiki use MediaWiki and that WikiIndex has since its inception - but the software doesn't have to override community ideals. Again, I really don't understand your frustrations Sean, is it not ok to talk about things? People check out of wiki when they want, and check back in when they want - it is the nature of wiki - I would also say that Ray King owns the domain, the idea was mine, and John Stanton implemented. I am not a Meatball:GodKing - the community has always run this wiki. Why do you say a lot of effort is wasted here? ~~ MarkDilley

Oh, YiFei, sorry for spamming your talk page :((( Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmintalk2HH 03:42, 5 May 2013 (PDT)

Never mind. I like them because I can make my timestamps in UTC. --YiFei | talk 10:49, 5 May 2013 (UTC)
OK, I understand that, and appreciate you want UTC timestamps. But Mark should fix the MediaWiki software (or get someone else to fix it) - so that the default timestamp is UTC, and also so that individuals can actually alter it to their own personal timezone via their own preference settings. Its a great template, but it would be a hassle for every single user to use it, when the MW software should automatically do it for us. Best :)) Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmintalk2HH 05:33, 5 May 2013 (PDT)
I think Ray King actually own this wiki. See who.godaddy.com/WhoIs.aspx?domain=wikiindex.org&isc=ALEXADOM --YiFei | talk 12:49, 5 May 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, I know Ray (aka User:Rathbone) owns the domain name, but I think that Ray has handed over day-to-day control and running of the wiki to MarkDilley. I don't know if Mark has access to the server though! :// Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmintalk2HH 07:57, 5 May 2013 (PDT)
If Mark have to change the settings, he must change https://WikiIndex.org/LocalSettings.php, which needs access to the server. By the way, why are there two Ray Kings -- User:Ray King and User:Rathbone? --YiFei | talk 15:09, 5 May 2013 (UTC)

User:Emufarmers

The page was deleted and protected because it had been the target of a spammer/vandal. Spamming contained religious commentary which was removed. TeraS (talk) 03:47, 5 May 2013 (PDT)

I'm just researching why he can be an sysop, how User:Emufarmers2 exist without creating an account, just things like this. --YiFei | talk 10:53, 5 May 2013 (UTC)
I'm not a programmer (so I don't know the specific detail), but I think I've heard that anyone who has access to a certain MediaWiki file (maybe 'settings.php') on the host server can somehow gain 'backdoor' access to a wiki, and grant themselves sysop and crat rights, without actually having an account on said wiki. I've blocked Emufarmers2 - but I still think we have vulnerabilities with our software setup. Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmintalk2HH 05:38, 5 May 2013 (PDT)
It's not possible. See https://WikiIndex.org/LocalSettings.php --YiFei | talk 12:52, 5 May 2013 (UTC)

Talk page policy

I noticed you've moved my replies in the past, and while I mostly thought it strange, I'm afraid I must ask you to please not do so in the future for a few reasons:

  • This is not Wikipedia. The link you provided is helpful, but those rules are not necessarily applicable everywhere.
  • The method of reply used is not improper to my knowledge, as posting replies on the original talk page only sends one user new message updates, especially if they have email updates enabled.
  • I have sent messages like the ones you have complained about in the past to other users without problems before.
  • The messages I was sending to another user (who in this case happens to be a fellow admin on another wiki) were to discuss how to communicate with each other more efficiently since the web host our wiki was on was making direct communication there difficult, and both of us getting replies to each other was vital.
  • The methods we used to communicate did not violate any rules here, and we communicated in a similar manner to each other on the wiki we were discussing without a problem.

In short, please do not remove replies from my talk pages or others in the name of your interpretation of how they should be used from now on, at least not without consulting Mark Dilley first. Arcane (talk) 08:03, 12 June 2013 (PDT)Arcane

Admin things

About your request to be one of the Sysops, that I have to place in the hands of Mark as this is something that I don't feel I have the right to do without his permission. I would suggest contacting him off Wiki and talking to him about this. TeraS (talk) 13:18, 20 June 2013 (UTC)

Ok. But I'm not sure he'll reply right now. I've already sent him some e-mails, including this request today. But the last one, about a typo in Template:Vandal and protecting Category talk:Wiki Topic, he hasn't replied to me yet, and neither fixed them --YiFei | talk 13:46, 20 June 2013 (UTC)
I'll protect the talk page now, where is the typo? TeraS (talk) 14:30, 20 June 2013 (UTC)
It's actually a difference between British English and American English accroding to Wiktionary, but the word vandalising is being treated as a typo on my iPad. I'm not sure it's necessary to change it. (But prefer) --YiFei | talk 14:39, 20 June 2013 (UTC)
I had an insane work week last week AND I found that all my WikiIndex alert messages were in my spam folder. Sorry! ~~ MarkDilley

It is a wiki and people do what they can

Hi YiFei, see your edit summaries and think you are frustrated - I hope not. Look forward to the abuse filter bot - looks very helpful! Best, MarkDilley

Oh. Sorry. I just find that I have to notify every sysop if I'm not. First, Sean, then, you, then Arcane. Just getting tired of that. --YiFei | talk 14:59, 21 June 2013 (UTC)
I think people will make mistakes on the wiki - that is kinda why I think it works. Wiki:WikiPeace, MarkDilley
BTW, it's not actually a bot. It's a kind of reserved user, just like User:MediaWiki default. --YiFei | talk 15:11, 21 June 2013 (UTC)
Looks cool, I see its log and I don't see those in Special:RecentChanges - hopeful that it is really, really effective! :-) MarkDilley
It only shows when a block happened. Filter 4 does that, but filter 9 is also a common type of link spam. I'm thinking of adding it as a blocking filter too. --YiFei | talk 23:10, 21 June 2013 (UTC)
Also, accounts like User:ABIDEEN0 would tigger filter 7 and 8. --YiFei | talk 23:14, 21 June 2013 (UTC)
Where is the guide / documentation on what these filters do and how they do it, I think it is facsinating. If there is not any, I would like to help create some. Best, MarkDilley
See Category talk:Active administrators of this wiki#Seems like account spam is increasing. --YiFei | talk 02:56, 23 June 2013 (UTC)

On blocking no edit users

Myself and the rest of the administration have been blocking no edit users like the example you brought up because, typically, most of those accounts have either matched patterns of spammers as seen on other wikis (some of whom have used these accounts as sleepers), and because most vandals and spambots make throwaway accounts with nonsense strings of information and typically tend to make many accounts in a short amount of time, either as part of their programming or as sleeper sockpuppets.

You can review the block log to see what I mean.

Also, most users who sign onto WikiIndex who turn out to be legitimate usually make new wiki pages, create user pages, or edits that are obviously not vandal edits almost immediately after joining, barring the occasional vandal revisionist (rewriting a page to suit their beliefs without being an obvious vandal) or religious spammer (we've had a few who deface pages on wikis they feel insult their beliefs with their own hateful interpretation of the content).

If you feel this policy should be changed, I suggest expressing your concerns to MarkDilley. Me personally, I have noticed how effective the Abuse filter has been, so you make a very good point for your opposition to the current policy, but by the same token, spammers and vandals can always switch tactics to get around it, and given the huge amounts of spam and vandalism we've had to fight, we tend to err on the side of caution.

Regardless, thanks for letting me know how you feel about banning no edit users. --Arcane (talk) 19:09, 28 June 2013 (UTC)Arcane

new for me

Hi YiFei, this edit has me baffled and a little excited as I have never seen it before, can you explain it to me. Thanks! ~~ MarkDilley

I restored the page, so now the revision exists. Special:Permalink is just a shortcut to all existing (not deleted) revisions. So I made it like that. (Learnt from Commons:User:Leyo) --YiFei | talk 05:24, 29 June 2013 (UTC)

Linking english button to arabic page

Thanks. I tried it and it helps me a lot, but a lot of the navigation buttons are not translated into Arabic. They are all in English except for the Toolbox which is entirely in Arabic.

buttons in English link to pages in English; Arabic buttons link to pages translated into Arabic.

I translated in Arabic and created the page of 'Add a Wiki' named إضافة ويكي (https://WikiIndex.org/index.php?title=WikiIndex:%D8%A5%D8%B6%D8%A7%D9%81%D8%A9_%D9%88%D9%8A%D9%83%D9%8A) but i can not linking it to the translated page in arabic.

The page 'Add a Wiki' is protected.

How I can link ’ home ‘ from ‘community’ to the Arabic page مرحبا, because ‘Home’ links me always to: https://WikiIndex.org/Welcome not to: https://WikiIndex.org/%D9%85%D8%B1%D8%AD%D8%A8%D8%A7.

For Add a Wiki, I unprotected for you. For the sidebar, can you give me a translation?

Buttons don't link to translated pages, changes reverted

Hi. Thank you for removing the protection and pages 'Home' and 'Add a Wiki'. But not refer directly to pages translated in arabic.

I was obliged to use 'Redirect'. My Redirection was reverted by you. Apologies if I made a mistake with the community..Brahfous (talk) 15:21, 2 July 2013 (UTC)

To change all the mw-panel of my Wikiindex into arabic

Here are the elements of the mw-panel translated into Arabic:

التغييرات الأخيرة = Recent changes

بوابة مجتمع الويكي = Community portal

قرابات ويكي = WikiNode

موقف جولة بالحافلة = TourBusStop

قوائم ويكي = Wiki Lists

ناس الويكي = Wiki People

شعارات ويكي = Wiki Logos

التحرير الجماعي = Etherpad

موارد = resources

الكتب والفيديوهات = Books and Video

المدونات = Weblogs

ويكي عشوائي = Random Wiki

صفحات المساعدة = help pages

صفحة معلوماتي = Page information

The rest of the buttons are already translated into Arabic. With my gratitude. Brahfous (talk) 19:13, 2 July 2013 (UTC)

Partly done, I'm having trouble translating Page information. --YiFei | talk 08:52, 3 July 2013 (UTC)

To complete translating and linking arabic equivalent

Thanks for making changes to the lateral panel of WikiIndex. All is in Arabic except for ‘page information’.

Can you change this button to صفحة معلوماتي.

The equivalent of Sandbox(mw-head) in Arabic is ملعب تجربة .

How to link these buttons directly to pages translated into Arabic and not to those in English , especially WikiIndex:إضافة_ويكي (Add a Wiki). I noticed the “other languages:ar “ link at the bottom of the page but not everyone may notice it. Gratefulnesses. Brahfous (talk) 19:50, 3 July 2013 (UTC)

Bye --YiFei | talk 14:55, 17 October 2013 (UTC)

Sadly, the changes to Template:TOC right have now messed up many other articles which use it. See Regiowikis for an example - before it was altered, the TOC would float immediately below the infobox. I think we need to revert the TOC right template, and try to fix the padding/margin spacing and placement for the TourBusStop box. I understand (and respect) why the IP editor wanted this change, but it has resulted in messing up far more articles than has been resolved. Maybe we ought to undelete Template:WikiMANNia/TOC. What are your thoughts on this? Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmintalk2HH 02:19, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

Would it look cooler with the toctree on? --YiFei | talk 10:27, 24 October 2013 (UTC)
Hi, Sean. This was exactly, why I defined a separate {{Template:WikiMANNia/TOC}}! ;-)
But {{Template:WikiMANNia/TOC}} can be moved to {{Template:TOC right_"somethingelse"}}, for example {{Template:TOC right without clear}}, to have both posibilities. Another solution is, to add a parameter to {{Template:TOC right}} like "clear=set" or "clear=unset" or somethink like that.
It's allways the same: First think a lot, after this do hacking. Otherwise you have double work! ;-)) --89.15.112.107 11:00, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

MW special pages and strange templates

I've noticed a few strange templates appearing - particularly dealing with page count and wikiFactor on a few differing multilingual articles, such as WikiMANNia, Psiram and no doubt a few others. They all seem to have been created by a German IP editor, and I don't understand the need for them.

And can you advise what is the purpose of MediaWiki:Abusefilter-warning-br and Template:Br - the template is just a simple html code, which is very widely used throughought the wiki-world and beyond.

Looks like you've been doing an amazing job here whilst I've been ill - really appreciate your effort. :-))))) Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmintalk2HH 00:12, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

Creating cascading MediaWiki pages simply slows down the wiki, creates errors, and even creates excess server loading.

Please STOP flooding article histories with test edits. If you want to test new stuff - use a sandbox. If you want to test stuff in templates - please allow time for the system cache to purge, and THEN check related articles for the effects of your edit. Test edits make it very difficult - and time-consuming to track changes - especially when mistakes or un-desireable changes are made.

Finally, please use edit summaries which we can all understand. Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 17:05, 6 November 2013 (UTC)

List of harassing open proxies

https://WikiIndex.org/index.php?title=User:Abd/Sandbox&oldid=175900 is a list of the IPs involved in the recent harassment or editing of related pages. In particular, it appears that every one of the IPs involved -- with two exceptions listed at the bottom -- is likely an open proxy or TOR node. I show entries from the meta.wikipedia global block log for some, WikiMedia Foundation stewards generally indef hard-block identified open proxy ranges, then deal with possible interference with legitimate editors by suggesting IP block exemption.

This is for your information only, it is not a request for action.

I have only handled local admin tasks on a WMF wiki, and only very rarely used range blocks. So this was a new kind of investigation for me. I apologize for any inconvenience, I hope we can persuade Leucosticte to be less provocative. He will generally cooperate, if given clear boundaries. --Abd (talk) 16:14, 8 March 2014 (UTC)

new spamming episode

Hi YiFei, I don't know if you are aware that spammers seem to be getting through and editing articles? I've noticed two separate occurrences today (Monday 21 May). If you check the edit histories of Wiki and Talk:Wiki engine evolution tree, you can get an idea of their latest methods of spamming. Hope you will be able to update any of your abuse filter settings to counter them.

Hope you are well, and best regards :) Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 19:26, 21 July 2014 (UTC)

Sorry I was away for 2 weeks. For the Wiki one, I'm not sure about how to determine whether the two edits are spam by AF. For Talk:Wiki engine evolution tree, how about "Prevent new users from adding 10+ links with nothing more"? And thanks for notifying me :)--YiFei | talk 22:42, 21 July 2014 (UTC)
Like the prevent x links from being added with nothing more. Agree, not sure how to stop the other type of spam. To both of you, rockin!! ~~ MarkDilley
Hope Special:AbuseFilter/32 will do --YiFei | talk 10:39, 23 July 2014 (UTC)
Filter 32 looks great, although I tweaked the grammar slightly, I hope that is ok (please revert if you wish). You've done awesome work with all the abuse filters, and I think they are a massive improvement, so a huge thanks :))
Just thinking out loud, could another filter be created (for new users only) which prevents new articles being created (and maybe existing articles editied) which don't include one of our main templates (the obvious being template:Wiki - but another could be template:Not a wiki), or one of our existing categories? Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 22:23, 25 July 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the grammar fix :)
And for "new articles with no main templates or categories"(?), could the filter only tag an edit or even just log the edit? IMO such edit might actually be useful. And what about wiki people and ideas? They usually don't have such main templates. --YiFei | talk 03:15, 27 July 2014 (UTC)
I bow to your knowledge with the filters - you know far more about them than I do :)))). For wiki people - can you restrict a filter to work in a specic namespace? Maybe create one filter with one set of rules for our main namespace which needs either a template and/or a category, and a different filter for User: and User talk: namespaces with say differing rules - how about limiting it to five urls, and the url must contain the word wiki - afterall, most wiki people like to list any other wikis they edit. As for wiki ideas - good question . . . maybe we just have to accept that only autoconfirmed users can create such articles. Would any of those suggestions work? Best Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 15:58, 28 July 2014 (UTC)
Thanks :D Could the filters be:
  1. New users (< 5 edits) and anons have to put either a template and/or a category to their new article, or else they will be given a warning (and nothing else?). There's no good way to automatically detect whether a template or category exists afaik.
  2. User pages for new users can hold maximum 5 links unless the user page contains "wiki", or else they will be given a warning (and nothing else?).
Are these okay for you? --YiFei | talk 09:53, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
Sorry for the late reply :/ Yes, please go ahead with those when you get a moment. :)) Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 13:23, 7 August 2014 (UTC)
It's okay. I hope Special:AbuseFilter/33 and Special:AbuseFilter/34 will do, but there's no such spams atm to test these. --YiFei | talk 02:24, 8 August 2014 (UTC)

Is it necessary to create a redirect in case of pages that did not get used/linked to until then? Why not just delete? Manorainjan (talk) 11:19, 11 August 2014 (UTC)

I'm not sure about deletions. If you feel that an image or a redirect should be deleted, feel free to put a {{delete}} there. --YiFei | talk 11:54, 11 August 2014 (UTC)
Redirects on files are a bad idea, as they'll then create a false positive link. YiFei, do you have ability to suppress creating redirects on page move? Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 16:25, 11 August 2014 (UTC)
Yes, I have the permission to suppress redirects. But I not sure what's a false positive link, and why is it bad. As you can see, Wikimedia Commons moves files all the time and most of the time there's no suppressing redirects. Since the image I moved was linked, I'd rather not suppress the redirect. --YiFei | talk 00:15, 12 August 2014 (UTC)
When you create a redirect (without supressing the original) of a main namespace article, and then click on Special:WhatLinksHere, the list of links clearly indicates redirects, and you are given the option to hide redirects. However, on file namespace articles containing images, the old 'redirected' file name will show up below the image as a live link. This isn't ideal if you wish to search for 'orphaned' images by selecting the File namespace from the Special:LonelyPages – hence my term 'false positive'. WM Commons may be happy with that situation, and they have a massive army of editors (and probably bots) who can fix that. Here at WikiIndex, we don't have the luxury of an army of editors.  :)) Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 14:47, 12 August 2014 (UTC)
And a massive army of web tools :) Thanks for the explanation, and I'll suppress the redirects. --YiFei | talk 23:48, 12 August 2014 (UTC)

BOT

I see work coming for Your diligent BOT: User talk:Hoof Hearted#WikiIndex:Add a Wiki

This one's hard o.O IMO it's the way that {{Wiki}} works should be changed. --YiFei | talk 09:06, 10 September 2014 (UTC)

Therefore I suggested fist to change the function and then to clean up (insert all missing lines) with the bot (one time). And, since the 'inactive' discussion remains endless, those Pages would have to be excluded from the run. Possibly there need to be several runs first in order to mark the pages which should be changed, to find out, which is a Wiki page and which not. There may be several pages which do not even have a trace of that template on them but are still (embryonic) Wiki pages. From that perspective this first run can be tried before the function is repaired. How to find Wiki pages that do not contain the Wiki template at all? A true one Manorainjan (talk)

Well, Leucosticte had the article tagged {{delete|Author request}} on September 1st (and unfortunately, he is the author), which is a valid reason for deletion. I see no reason to keep the orphaned talk page. --YiFei | talk 08:49, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
Does that mean articles becoming the property of the one who create the page? Do authors of later contributions not get any 'right'. What is the licence under which this Wiki stands? What if someone creates the page and another one the talk page? That could lead to another 'endless' discussion easily.....Manorainjan (talk) 10:47, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
I forgot to answer Your question: The reason to keep an 'orphaned' talk page is, that before it becomes orphaned it would be the place to discuss the deletion if there are objections. And the deletion was neither undisputed nor urgent.Manorainjan (talk) 11:19, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
It's sort of a wiki tradition. See Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion#G7. Author requests deletion. With regard to the talk page, see Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion#G8. Pages dependent on a non-existent or deleted page for how English Wikipedia handles that. Yeah, if the deletion discussion were carried on at the talk page, they would keep the talk page, but that almost never happens. RationalWiki does keep the talk pages of deleted subject pages. Leucosticte (talk) 11:52, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
You want to argue on grounds of WP policies? Great! Than let us continue this little argument where it belongs: Who cares what rules Wikipedia supposedly follows?
It's kind of like, if you're arguing a case in a U.S. Court of Appeals, mentioning how other circuits ruled on the issue. Those decisions aren't binding on the court that will be ruling in your case, but they could be persuasive. Leucosticte (talk) 13:03, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
Haha, that's so funny that You use the word persuasive ;-) I just thought of that in my reply on Your talk page Manorainjan (talk) 13:27, 10 September 2014 (UTC)

Account creation/confirmation

It looks like a new account needs to be confirmed before one can log in. How often do the admins check for new accounts and confirm them? For new users it looks like they have to wait for the confirmation email which they have to use to activate the account. And when the confirmation email is not coming, I think many would give up or forget about it. M.

Usually when there is an email-confirmed account request, Recentchanges would have a banner like (except that the border is red)
Some admins check recentchanges frequently and should see the notices as soon as possible. As for the ones who can't get their email confirmed, you're right, it pisses them off. --YiFei | talk 08:23, 21 September 2014 (UTC)

Manorainjan, why is this of concern to you? You don't 'own' WikiIndex, and you have repeatedly stated you categorically do NOT want sysop rights! So why are you so concerned in how we (the trusted community of crats & sysops) operate our wiki?

But for the sake of other folks who wish to become a harmonious part of our community, I'll add my two-pence worth to the correct (in parts) answer which YiFei has given. I personally check recent changes many times each day during the periods I'm online, and will review any new account requests as soon as possible. The action banner appears for all new account requests, irrespective of weather their e-mail is confirmed or not. We also have the option to authorise new accounts, at our own careful discretion, even if their e-mail is not confirmed; though I'm not willing to describe such circumstances, to protect the integrity of the Confirm account system. As for the potential new account users being "pissed off" over a minor delay in confirming their account - well perhaps they should be a little more accomodating and understanding, and if not, then perhaps they don't belong on WikiIndex. Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 10:15, 21 September 2014 (UTC)

I Know there was an account creation but it did not show in RC. M.

Excerpt from: Help:Template

Noinclude, includeonly, and onlyinclude

This feature is not available before version 1.6. These features are applied as nesting pairs, or 'Blocks', as it is said they enclose the material so that they can be said to begin and end a block of wikitext (code).

noinclude blocks

Anything between <noinclude> and </noinclude> will be processed and displayed only when the page is being viewed directly; it will not be included or substituted. Possible applications are:

  1. Categorising templates, see template documentation;
  2. Interlanguage links to similar templates in other languages;
  3. Pages in the MediaWiki namespace.

Do these special abuse filters replace Extension:TitleBlacklist functionally? Manorainjan (talk)
  • Deleting accounts is not possible without direct database access. *They can replace. --YiFei | talk 12:47, 22 October 2014 (UTC)
  • Who is they and what can they replace?
  • what can be done to get those dysfunctional accounts out of the Special:ListUsers and statistics? We got an ratio 500:1 registered to active users. Manorainjan (talk) 15:18, 22 October 2014 (UTC)
  • Abuse filters can replace Extension:TitleBlacklist functionally theoretically, but could be harder to work with.
  • Extension:UserMerge (delete after merge; can't merge blocked accounts) But why would be dysfunctional accounts be a problem anyways? --YiFei | talk 15:36, 22 October 2014 (UTC)

I think no upgrade is needed, see Enabling 'hideuser' because Extension:Oversighter is integrated since 1.6 but disabled by default. What I'm not sure is, if one has to become oversighter in order to get that right, or if the bureaucrat can assign it to just any user?? Manorainjan (talk) 07:17, 25 October 2014 (UTC)

Bureaucrat can change a user's user groups, but not user group rights. They are stored in LocalSettings.php, a configuration file in the backend. To change the file requires "upgrade" (a way of saying backend changes). Oversighter is a wikimedia user group that hides information, but its name doesn't have to be "oversighter". Which groups can hideuser only depends on the configuration. --YiFei | talk 07:49, 25 October 2014 (UTC)

I've installed Extension:TitleBlacklist (the bundling is only for new installations, I think). The hideuser right lets you hide usernames on logs, but it doesn't affect the user list, as far as I know. Emufarmers (talk) 20:37, 29 October 2014 (UTC)

I don't see repeated vandalism. Or am I wrong? --YiFei | talk 11:44, 21 November 2014 (UTC)

It is one of the pages "Sweetie against the rest of the world" ;-) But this is not my point. If any IP-editor forces any sysop to make a little jump (delete-undelete), than measures should be taken to prevent further hiccups. Since you can not talk to an IP-editor, by semi-protecting the page the IP-editor would be forced to show flag, if he wishes to continue this. Also this wiki is only a bliki. So not really anybody else but the bliki owner would be affected.

Protection are for repeated cases imo. If the IP doesn't come back, no need for protection. Otherwise, that a clear indication of repeating vandalism, so a protection would be necessary. --YiFei | talk 02:19, 22 November 2014 (UTC)

i'd like to request a ban of said user, as she has a personal vendetta against the users of Uncyclopedia and Darthipedia, as evidenced on Talk:Brony Denza. Sweetie Belle (talk) 16:37, 4 November 2014 (UTC)

I don't process user problems (unless they are clear cases). Please request this elsewhere. --YiFei | talk 08:00, 5 November 2014 (UTC)
I have no such vendetta; it is clearly the other way round. Simply attempting to improve the wiki does not constitute a vendetta, but criticising such attempts, in this case, does. Llwy-ar-lawr (talk) 22:58, 6 November 2014 (UTC)
Sorry. Perhaps I should have worded my request better. I didn't mean to request a full block of Llwy-ar-lawr, but rather I wanted to request that she be barred from editing any topics pertaining to Uncyclopedia or Darthipedia on this wiki. This isn't so much a user problem (two users raising issues against each other) as it is a severe bias problem (one user raising issues against two communities on this wiki) that compromises the integrity and facts presented in the edits of myself and others. It's not my intention to bring wiki-drama or warring to WikiIndex, but to clarify what I mean: Llwy-ar-lawr is a former administrator on Uncyclopedia who has since been banned for reasons I'm not familiar with, and in recent weeks, she's taken to reverting any edits to articles relating to said wiki and inserting her own bias against the community to paint the wiki and its members in an ugly light, while simultaneously promoting her own wiki(s) in the process. Elsewhere, Llwy was apparently banned from another wiki called Darthipedia for vandalism and sockpuppeteering under the name Snarglefoop, and now she's trying to have articles related to the topic deleted because it's a "backwater troll wiki" in her view. When I spoke to her on IRC about this, I was told she would create one or two sockpuppet accounts on WikiIndex in the event she were to be banned, and any future edits would be reverted by her "army", and then she proceeded to spam me with an image of a mauled vagina. Regardless of whether or not you see it fit to ban her or her other accounts, what I'm requesting is that her edits be restricted to articles related to topics other than Uncyclopedia (and possibly even Darthipedia) as a means of countering these issues. Alternatively, I would also suggest protecting these articles from being edited by basic users. Having said that, I do understand that you don't typically process such requests, so if you're unable or unwilling, who would be the best administrator to get in contact with concerning this issue? Thank you in advance and sorry if this message comes as a bother. Sweetie Belle (talk) 04:11, 12 November 2014 (UTC)

You whitelisted. However, I could not find the active blacklist entry. The WikiIndex blacklist was adopted from the Wikipedia blacklist, which can be ragged. The global blacklist likewise; it is, however, more thorough, and items are generally removed from the Wikipedia list when they are globally blacklisted. We have a very short local blacklist on En.Wikiversity. Ideally, the message users receive when they attempt to add a blacklisted entry should explain clearly what to do if one has a legitimate purpose. Mostly, it's arcane and obscure, I've studied what happens with a major web site that was blacklisted. Most users just give up. --Abd (talk) 15:25, 4 January 2015 (UTC)

Weigh in on WikiIndex:ServerName#Poll?

I wanted to be sure to draw your attention to a potential decision to change the domain of this wiki. I hope you'll weigh in with your opinion. Thanks! BrandonCsSanders (talk) 20:08, 13 March 2015 (UTC)

autoblock?

Please review this: WikiIndex:Blocking and banning policy#Autoblock. Is it consistent with our local functionality? Maybe You can extend it by some hints on how to use or better not use it. Manorainjan 04:30, 6 June 2015 (PDT)

AFAIK all MediaWiki systems has the same kind of autoblock (automatic block of an IP address). And as for when to use it, use common sense when no such policy exist. I don't like policy-ize every single parameter to an action. --YiFei | talk 05:34, 6 June 2015 (PDT)

I wasn't trying to create policy. I saw Your changing of the block another admin executed. The term autoblock was unknown to me and not mentioned in our help section. Therefore I was simply trying to clarify what it means and how it works. If I would be inclined to add policy, this would have to be the next logical step anyway. One should not even try to blow up policy without proper understanding of the matter concerned. On the other hand, Your remark in the edit summary suggested to me that You are trying to establish policy: "turn[ed] off autoblock -- I don't see the reason to prevent the user (not the hacker) from editing" Whereas I would not know how to safely distinguish between hacker and user. Regarding common sense, I regard that expression as a misnomer, because those sense is not at all common. ;-) Manorainjan 06:20, 6 June 2015 (PDT)

I'm not sure what's happening here. --YiFei | talk 09:55, 6 June 2015 (PDT)

The hacker does not exist

User:HAL-9000 is a global vandal. There is no hacker. You can see that he is locked on Wikimedia, blocked on The Test Wiki... do not let him another chance. 79.41.169.216

How do You know, that SuperWindows and WindowsEditor90 are used by the same person? Manorainjan 07:56, 6 June 2015 (PDT)
I can confirm, as I am the owner of both accounts. 79.41.169.216 08:34, 6 June 2015 (PDT)

Weird magic words and red links

See here For some reason, sometimes the Main Page renders "Welcome, {{CURRENTUSER}}" (with CURRENTUSER in red) and sometimes not. Both with your preferred edit and the one I made. Both logged in and not. So weird. Plus, several links on the front page are mysteriously red even though they definitely lead to pages. Anyway, I don't think that your edit was a problem, as it happened after I reverted as well. Koavf (talk) 19:43, 21 June 2015 (PDT)

I have no idea what is going on with those magic words, as I don't have access to the backend. Besides, the {{CURRENTUSER}} in red link happens to me, but rarely, so it's hard for me to do some debugs and find the error. Maybe Jason, BrandonCsSanders and Ray King know? --YiFei | talk 19:57, 21 June 2015 (PDT)
Tech support I considered saying something to one of them (does Jason work on the backend of the site) but it didn't seem that important. I don't know if you're interested but Manorainjan is talking to me on my talk page on an admin-related issue which is actually of some consequence to you. I deleted a blank userpage in part because of your actions in the past of deleting them (I don't have any strong feelings on it but if you're going to do it anyway, it seems non-controversial for me to do it). I don't know if you want to weigh in but I figured I'd mention it since we're talking anyway. Thanks. Koavf (talk) 20:00, 21 June 2015 (PDT)
"Blank pages should be red links" was Sean's idea, and I do support it. However, I don't think Category:AccountUsedNot has any value at all. Whether an account is used or not can be determined by checking contribs, logs, and deleted contribs at any time. And as for those structure categories, maybe I would go with the wikimedia method of using category redirects. --YiFei | talk 20:19, 21 June 2015 (PDT)
I can only say that main page problem is something related to parser cache. --YiFei | talk 21:23, 21 June 2015 (PDT)

Knodorn

What was the problem? --Manorainjan 13:24, 8 January 2016 (PST)

Spam Manorainjan, you probably meant to talk to me: the user submitted a request which had some copy that could either be written by a non-native English speaker or someone else with a shaky grasp of written English or a spambot. Koavf (talk) 20:14, 8 January 2016 (PST)
What I see is, the page is entirely unrelated to wikis, and may be a self-promo userpage. The user can show he's contributing to WikiIndex by adding, or updating some wiki entries here. --YiFei | talk 21:12, 8 January 2016 (PST)
I found his user page quite bragging, but do not see any reason for deletion in this. For some people the request to submit info about one self during registration might have this effect, they might simply copy CV-like stuff they are using elsewhere. Is bragging about ones achievements on ones user page a violation against wikiIndex rules? --Manorainjan 23:48, 8 January 2016 (PST)

The account request form reads: "Your biography will be set as the initial content for your userpage. Make sure you are comfortable publishing such information. Try to include any relevant credentials in your biography below. Personal biography (plain text only):"

Obviously that person was very "comfortable to publish" this information ;-) But basically I think, he did as requested. Manorainjan 00:01, 9 January 2016 (PST)
