Halopedia is a wiki dedicated to documenting all aspects of the Halo series of first-person shooter video games, and also all aspects of the universe in which they are set.
History[edit]
Around October 2004, the Halo clan known as BlackBoxRepublic began discussing the idea of a Halo wiki, then titled Halo Wiki. On October 28, 2004, a site was formed at "http://www.blackboxrepublic.com/", which led to a "coming soon" splash screen. On November 4, 2004, user AgentSeethroo, with the help of Porplemontage, officially formed the wiki at "http://wiki.blackboxrepublic.com". On April 5, 2005, AgentSeethroo expressed interest in merging the wiki content into The Video Game Wiki, though users were against this idea. AgentSeethroo also appointed several new administrators to assist in site maintenance around this time, most notably Buz and Dragonclaws.
On August 9, 2005, AgentSeethroo asked users if the site name should be changed to Halopedia. Dragonclaws voted in favor of this, believing it would make it distinct from the newly launched "www.halowiki.com". On August 11, 2005, the domain "https://www.halopedia.com" was officially registered and the wiki was moved. On February 14, 2006, the wiki gained publicity after being mentioned by Bungie, the original developers of Halo, on the official website. On February 20, 2006, the wiki was mentioned by the Tahlequah Daily Press in an article about Halo. This positive publicity caused Halopedia's membership to increase by 300 percent over several weeks.
With an expanding community, server costs for the wiki skyrocketed. Through May, June and July of the same year, the wiki experienced sporadic outages, culminating into a period of remaining completely offline for several weeks straight. With AgentSeethroo admitting he could no longer host the wiki alone, it was decided that the wiki would merge with "halo.wikia.com" on Wikia, a former rival of Halopedia. The merge ultimately benefitted the site, bringing about new active editors. Around September 2007, the wiki reached 3,000 articles written.
In March 2008, the wiki began experimenting with Wikia's new social tools. These new features served as a test bed for Wikia to explore their overall usefulness and accessibility. Among the new features was a point reward system, which incentivized users to contribute to attain a higher score. While initially beneficial to Halopedia, one major flaw was points being rewarded regardless of whether or not an edit was constructive. This led to an influx of shoddy and poor edits to the wiki that contributed very little. The system was ultimately restricted to mainspace articles, avatar uploading and signing up, a move that would help restore content quality.
In August 2008, the wiki reached 5,000 articles written. In late 2008, the wiki began using Wikia's default skin at the time, Monaco, replacing the custom skin it originally used. From 2009 to 2010, the site would continually change its theme to pay tribute to the release of Halo 3: ODST and Halo: Reach. In mid-August 2010, Wikia introduced their new mandatory skin Oasis, removing the Monaco skin with it. Though Wikia defended Monaco's removal, citing Oasis as "sleek and helpful to newer users", many users disagreed, believing that it reduced accessibility and brought about unnecessary features. On October 17, 2010, the majority voted to return to the wiki to its former independent domain. The Wikia wiki was renamed to Halo Nation, and Halopedia would eventually move to the "halopedia.org" in the summer of 2012. On September 27, 2015, the wiki reached 10,000 articles written.
On February 4, 2019, a vote was passed to merge Halo Nation with Halopedia, bringing Halo Nation's staff and content with it. The now FANDOM wiki was rebranded as Halo Alpha to reflect the merger. As of 2022, Halopedia hosts over 15,000 articles and continues to be regarded as the most accurate and reliable Halo wiki.
The wiki runs on the MediaWiki wiki engine and is funded by advertising.
