Bulbapedia, the community-driven Pokémon encyclopedia, touts itself as 'the community-driven Pokémon encyclopedia'. The wiki was established in private on 21 December 2004, as a feature of the Pokémon fan-site Bulbagarden. Two months later, on 14 February 2005, Bulbapedia was publicly launched.[1]

Bulbapedia covers all elements of the Pokémon franchise, including the games, anime, other merchandise, and the fandoms.[1]

Relationships

Bulbapedia is a founding member of the Encyclopaediae Pokémonis, a network of Pokémon wikis currently in nine different languages.[1]

Bulbapedia is also a co-founding member of the Nintendo Independent Wiki Alliance (NIWA), a network of English language Nintendo wikis owned and operated by independent fan sites.[1]

As part of the Bulbagarden network, Bulbapedia works closely with Bulbanews, a Pokémon news wiki, and the Bulbagarden Archives, the Bulbawiki image repository.

Staff, members, statistics

Bulbapedia is overseen by a large Staff; consisting of an Editorial board, and a team of administrators. There are over 50,000 registered users, and more than 2000 active users.

An exact wikiFactor (wF) for the site is impossible, with the one presented at the top of this page only an estimate. This is due to the long gap between when inbuilt wiki engine hit statistics stopped being collected by Bulbapedia, and when it started to use Google Analytics to track statistics in late 2009. Statistics from 1 December 2009 to 1 December 2010 alone would give a wikiFactor of 268. Given that the wiki has existed for many years previous to this, the exact value can safely be assumed to be significantly higher.

Encyclopaediae Pokémonis, also stylised Encyclopædiæ Pokémonis, is an open content collective project of Pokémon wiki encyclopaedia, available in different languages.

History

The first person to conceive the idea of a Pokémon wiki was Meowth346 of Pokémon Forever. Eventually, Bulbapedia itself was created in December 2004, and opened to the public the following February. In April 2005, nYoo suggested a German-language version. Later in the year, in August, the idea that would eventually spawn PokéWiki came to be.

Due to their both being open content wiki Pokémon encyclopedias, PokéWiki and Bulbapedia soon allied to form Encyclopædiæ Pokémonis, hoping that soon more would join the group. Eventually, the Japanese-language ポケモンWiki answered the call in June 2006, having been created in April of that year.

On 6 April 2007, the Polish-language Wikinezka joined the group. The French-language Poképédia joined in September 2007, and the Portuguese-language LANDpedia joined in December 2007. The Spanish-language Pokéteca joined in August 2009, while the Italian-language Pokémon Central Wiki joined the group in August 2010. The Chinese-language 52Poké Wiki joined in March 2013. The Spanish-language WikiDex joined in May 2018.

The seven member wikis interlink to each other, and navigation between articles on the same subject is made possible by links in their respective sidebars.

Name

'Encyclopædiæ Pokémonis' is Latin for Encyclopedias of Pokémon. This translation takes the idea that 'Pokémon' is both the singular and plural one step further, by using the singular 'Pokémonis' rather than the plural 'Pokémonum'.

The logo of Encyclopædiæ Pokémonis is a Poké Ball image superimposed over a polar azimuthal equidistant projection of the planet Earth, reminiscent of the Flag of the United Nations. The colour of the Poké Ball, as well as the colour of the underlying Earth, differs among the individual members of Encyclopaediae Pokémonis: Bulbapedia's is green, PokéWiki's is teal, Pokémon Wiki's is blue, Wikinezka's is red, Poképédia's is yellow, Pokémon Central's is indigo, 52Poké Wiki's is vermilion, LANDpedia's was orange, and Pokéteca's was brown.
