Canton (French origin, most commonly in Switzerland, also some Spanish-speaking countries), department (French origin, and adopted by the Spanish), province (Roman origin, of the Roman Empire, Canada), prefecture (Latin origin, contemporaneous in Japan, China, and other countries), and territory (Australia and Canada) are other words describing the same.
