LyricWiki, also subsequently known as LyricWikia,[1] then Lyrically,[2] and latterly returning to LyricWiki,[3] is a former free Wikia entertainment wiki site, and finally a Fandom music community, which was a single source where anyone could get reliable music lyrics for any song from any artist 'without being hammered by invasive ads' (emphasis on invasive, it had advertising on the wiki site for users who were not logged in).

LyricWiki contained lyrics to over 1,000,000 songs on 100,000 albums by more than 100,000 artists. The over 2.8 million content pages were categorized by artist, album, song-name, genre, and hometown of band. Some songs also had translations.

LyricWiki was named the 'DreamHost Site of the Month' (DHSOTM) for April 2006, and was shortly thereafter featured on Digg and in a Lifehacker article.

During its existence, LyricWiki was the second largest MediaWiki-powered wiki site on the internet, the first still being the English Wikipedia (En.Wp).

LyricWiki was originally independently hosted and located at LyricWiki.org. However, it was subsequently acquired by and hosted at Wikia (sometime early 2009),[4] with its original founder Sean Colombo given the duty of 'Lyrics Manager' at Wikia, making him the only wiki founder on the farm to make money off his creation.

Whilst at Wikia, LyricWikia content was subject to differing licenses, including copyright; specifically:[5]

  1. all song lyrics are copyright of their respective owner(s), but were licensed by Wikia through LyricFind;
  2. whereas, all 'non-lyrics content' was released under the Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike 3.0 license (CC-BY-SA-3.0);
  3. and, any translations of song lyrics are the work of the translator and therefore copyright by the translator.

On 19 November 2019, LyricWikia was 'closed for editing' by Wikia.[6] By 21 August 2020, it was announced that LyricWiki would be shut down by Fandom on 21 September 2020.[7]

We regret to inform you that the Lyrics Wiki community will be closed by Fandom on September 21, 2020.

This decision was made after some difficult conversations Fandom had in an attempt to find a path forward for this wiki. A number of you have invested large amounts of time in trying to make this community thrive - we deeply appreciate that effort and respect their dedication.

Unfortunately, a number of factors have made this closure necessary. First, Fandom must continually renew our various licensing agreements in order to host lyrics. Over the years, the cost of these licenses have increased and put a strain on the return on investment in terms of revenue.

Additionally, we are sensitive to a number of lyrics on this wiki that have problematic words and themes in them which generally do not belong on our network. As a compromise, we disabled a number of editing features last year. That was not a good long-term solution for a wiki community as editing is core to its health and growth.

Ultimately the decision was reached due to Fandom's continued migrations onto our Unified Community Platform. LyricsWiki has a number of custom features that would have had to be completely redeveloped to work in a modern MediaWiki installation. It was simply not possible to justify the massive lift from our engineers to make one or two features work only for this one wiki.

Due to the complex legal arrangements with our licensing for this wiki, we will not be able to offer a content dump after closure.

After that date, LyricWikia was taken offline and its former URLs now redirect to Community.Fandom.com's 'Not a valid community' page.[8]
