Can you help determine what upgrade is needed?[edit]

Hi Jack, if you wouldn't mind helping to figure out what this wiki needs, I can try to get it done. Best, MarkDilley

Hi Mark, thank you for your message. :-)
Special:Version says that WikiIndex is currently running MediaWiki 1.17.0, which has reached its end-of-life in this month; see the table on Version lifecycle and the fancy timeline there for more information. So upgrading MediaWiki core from 1.17.0 to the latest stable, 1.19.1, would definitely be welcome.
In addition to that, it might be useful to upgrade some of the extensions; or it might be so that some of them even need to be upgraded to function correctly. For example, as of now, WikiIndex is running Semantic MediaWiki version 1.5.6 but according to the official Semantic MediaWiki home page, the latest version is 1.7.1.
Like I wrote on WikiIndex:Anti-spam measures#WikiIndex is being overwhelmed by spam bots, some new anti-spam tools might also help; right now I'd recommend Extension:SimpleAntiSpam and Extension:AbuseFilter; both extensions are used on the Wikimedia Foundation wikis, such as Wikipedia and related projects, so they should be stable enough.
Please let me know if you have any questions. --Jack Phoenix 04:31, 29 June 2012 (PDT)
Hmm, that wasn't too hard. Emufarmers (talk) 21:07, 4 July 2012 (PDT)

Translation review[edit]

Hi Jack. Would you mind reviewing the translation on the AnarkismiWiki article here on WikiIndex please? Many thanks and best regards, Hoof Heartedtalk2HH 14:38, 19 September 2012 (PDT)

I didn't yet touch the machine-translated English translation, but I have to wonder why we even bother with that page. The URL listed on the article displays a message stating "off line"[sic] and the WikiIndex article is more of a(n outdated) status update on the wiki's situation rather than an article explaining what the wiki is about, etc.
The article also mentions that the administration's e-mail address is aropupu[ at ]stc.cx, so maybe you'll want to contact them at that address and ask about the wiki's situation. --Jack Phoenix (talk) 05:36, 21 September 2012 (PDT)

checking in about MediaWiki version[edit]

Please update this section if there is different information - thanks, MarkDilley

Commented on that page. Also, thank you for the extra tools you gave me a few days ago, Mark! :-) --Jack Phoenix (talk) 06:46, 28 April 2013 (PDT)
Sean pointed out that it was an obvious thing to do! :-) Best, MarkDilley
Guilty as charged, M'lud :p Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmintalk2HH 09:36, 28 April 2013 (PDT)
It's a good thing to be guilty of, Sean. (-; --Jack Phoenix (talk) 08:07, 29 April 2013 (PDT)

The MediaWiki shuffle[edit]

Hi Jack, I would like to move your user page to Jack Phoenix - with your talk page staying at User talk:Jack Phoenix. I think that for Wikipedia - putting the people who do the work - one step removed makes sense, at WikiIndex, we are all about the people who do the work on wikis too. What do you think about that? Best, MarkDilley

If you (or someone else) wants to create a main namespace page about me, by all means feel free to, but I don't think that moving the user page from userspace to mainspace would make that much sense. User pages, in my view, are more or less structured profiles written by the respective users, whereas main namespace pages are — or should be, in my view — more "encyclopedic". Sure, we're not the English Wikipedia or anything like that, but if we look at the user page of Lee Daniel Crocker, a prominent MediaWiki developer and long-time Wikipedia editor and the main namespace article about him, you'll notice that there's a certain difference in tone and whatnot.
It'd actually be somewhat flattering to have someone write a mainspace article about me, but I'll leave that for "that someone else" as I don't want to be tooting my own horn too much. :-) --Jack Phoenix (talk) 08:07, 29 April 2013 (PDT)
I think the main point here is that WikiIndex cultural roots are pre-wikipedia, as such, we don't really adhere to encyclopedic... anything. In all the wiki that I worked on before English Wikipedia became "the wiki" - your name page was your page - just like on any page, you or anyone else can edit it. So, only with your permission, I would move User:Jack Phoenix to Jack Phoenix - else not. Best, MarkDilley
If having someone else write a more neutral biography about me is not an option, I'd prefer my user page to stay where it is. For reasoning, please refer to my previous message. Cheers! --Jack Phoenix (talk) 08:49, 2 May 2013 (PDT)
Yeah, that is not how we do it here, so just keeping you in the namespace seems like the best option. Best, MarkDilley

Spamming range blocked[edit]

Just blocked a spamming range -- 198.27.74.0/24. I haven't find any palse positives yet. --YiFei | talk 07:43, 15 July 2013 (UTC)

Minor edit for Bot[edit]

I see this and I think yeah! But then I still see the edits in Special:RecentChanges - any thought about why? Best, MarkDilley

and then I figure out it is Abuse Filter -Special:UserRights/Abuse_filter and so I changed it to bot, but should it still be administrator?
  1. Changing user rights doesn't affect older items, though I'm not sure if it would hide the newer log items. Good, Cxxchen's block is hidden from RC. --YiFei | talk 06:26, 22 August 2013 (UTC)
  2. The admin isn't possible to remove. It will re-apply itself. BTW, the admin right isn't needed, I've seen it de-admin others without being a crat. --YiFei | talk 19:42, 21 August 2013 (UTC)
  3. Also, don't you see Abuse filter never actually does any edit? --YiFei | talk 19:51, 21 August 2013 (UTC)

I've just been talking about you![edit]

Maybe you want to dive in here - we could do with your expertise. :)))) Pleeeeeaaaasssseeee. Sean, aka Hoof HeartedAdmin / 'Crattalk2HH 15:33, 28 July 2014 (UTC)

narrowing down the problem with email verification[edit]

I assume, that Your account is email-verified. Please add the domain part of Your email to this Help talk:E-mail so that we can see more clearly, which servers work and which not. Manorainjan (talk) 16:16, 28 September 2014 (UTC)

Request for ServerMove concerns[edit]

I wanted to be sure to draw your attention to the upcoming ServerMove and solicit your help in making the transition a positive rather than negative experience. Please take a moment to visit ServerMove and curate the list of concerns. Thanks! -- BrandonCsSanders (talk) 22:38, 14 November 2014 (UTC) (call forwarded by Manorainjan (talk) 23:20, 14 November 2014 (UTC))

Special:PopularPages[edit]

  • Is it so, that a shoutwiki-installation does not have Special:PopularPages?
  • it is needed to calculate wF.

Manorainjan (talk) 15:46, 9 March 2015 (UTC)

Most bigger sites run in miser mode to disable a bunch of badly-written and/or otherwise database-intensive features, one of which is the PopularPages special page (mind you, whenever there's a front-end cache, such as Varnish, involved, the page visit count data is wildly out-of-date and thus PopularPages is rather useless).
It's sad that whoever came up with the whole wF concept chose to use such an unstable metric for that. Luckily each MediaWiki installation has Special:Statistics, which provides you with some actually useful data, which you can use to determine if the wiki in question is a big or a small one. --Jack Phoenix (talk) 20:00, 8 April 2015 (UTC)

Weigh in on WikiIndex:Proposal: domain name change#Poll?[edit]

I wanted to be sure to draw your attention to a potential decision to change the domain of this wiki. I hope you'll weigh in with your opinion. Thanks! BrandonCsSanders (talk) 20:09, 13 March 2015 (UTC)

Done. --Jack Phoenix (talk) 20:00, 8 April 2015 (UTC)
