The wiki began on February 12, 2006 with the founding of the [[Half-Life Wiki]] on [[Wikia]], then named [[Wikicities]]. On May 18, 2007, the wiki's name was changed to "'''Combine OverWiki'''" to better describe the wiki's contents. On December 14, 2008, Klow was appointed as an administrator and introduced new policies to improve the wiki's standards, such as a Manual of Style and improved image management.

On 18 May, the wiki was renamed to '''Combine OverWiki''', a move made to help better describe the wiki's contents. On 14 December, Klow was appointed as an [[administrator]], and enacted new policies to better improve standards, introducing a Manual of Style, and improved image management.

2009 saw a considerable increase in site traffic. Many improvements to the wiki's content were made during this era, specifically targeting misinformation, head-canon and speculation. Many new articles with concise behind-the-scenes topics were introduced, while poorly written articles were cleaned up and/or removed. On February 28, users Klow and MattyDeinhoff were promoted to bureaucrats by Wikia staff. User YabbaMyIcing led the first community project in June to place all unused files onto content pages, leading to the subsequent creation of projects pages on July 6 to encourage more editors to assist with wiki endeavors. On February 9, 2010, Bramblepath was appointed as the 4th rollback user, later becoming an administrator on October of that same year.

On 28 February, Wikia staff promoted users Klow and MattyDeinhoff to [[bureaucrat]] status. In June, user YabbaMyIcing led the first community project to place all previously unused files onto content pages. On 6 July, project pages were officially added to help encourage new editors to assist with wiki content. In October, user Bramblepath was appointed to administrator.

On July 11, 2011, the wiki made the decision to fork into independence. Klow created a teaser website utilizing the new URL and introducing the new wiki motto, "Run. Think. Shoot. Edit." The move itself was spearheaded by Bramblepath. The reasoning behind forking was related to the diverging path of Wikia, currently named [[FANDOM]], which sought to turn communities into advertising farms that profited off the work of volunteer editors. To the wiki's dismay, Wikia had a strict policy of refusing to close wikis, even after the majority of the community had forks. This affected SEO (Search Engine Optimization), ensuring that the old wiki would always trump search results. Shortly before the move, two users, Fijure and Barnz, were appointed as sysops, and the wiki would officially reopen on January 2, 2012 after a slight false start. On November 12, 2012, the wiki moved its hosting to ValveTime, citing the need for hosting with superiors speeds and the need for people that could easily manage technical issues.
On 11 July 2011, the wiki announced the decision to move, or {{tag|fork}}, away from {{tag|Ex-Wikia|Wikia}} to a new, {{tag|independent}} domain. Klow was responsible for creating a teaser website utilizing the new domain and introducing the new site motto, "Run. Think. Shoot. Edit.", while Bramblepath was responsible for the move itself. Two users, Fijure and Barnz, were appointed as [[sysop]]s.  The [[fork]] culminated from the diverging path of Wikia, with staff believing they sought to turn communities into advertising farms, profiting off the work of volunteer editors. The original Wikia wiki was renamed to Half-Life Wiki after completion of the move. The wiki officially reopened on 2 January 2012 at <nowiki>https://CombineOverWiki.net/</nowiki>. On 12 November 2012, the wiki moved hosting services to the website [https://www.valvetime.net ValveTime], citing the need for superiors speeds and technical expertise.

On October 3, 2014, user Marphy Black was appointed as bureaucrat, and is currently the most active on the site admin. On May 26, 2017, the wiki moved to a different hosting provider and updated to the latest MediaWiki version. On November 2022, the wiki officially began its first non-Valve independent wiki affiliation, beginning with the [[Independent Fallout Wiki]], with the [[Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages]] following suit later in December.

Combine OverWiki is a wiki site dedicated to documenting all aspects of the Half-Life series of video games, as well as its shared universe with the Portal franchise. The wiki also serves as a hub for Half-Life and Portal fans alike.

History[edit]

The wiki was founded on 12 February 2006 with the name Half-Life Wiki on Wikicities, now known as Wikia or FANDOM. On 18 May, the wiki was renamed to Combine OverWiki, a move made to help better describe the wiki's contents. On 14 December, Klow was appointed as an administrator, and enacted new policies to better improve standards, introducing a Manual of Style, and improved image management.

In 2009, the wiki saw a considerable increase in traffic. Efforts were made to improve article content, specifically targeting misinformation, head-canon, and speculation. New articles with concise behind-the-scenes topics were created, while poorly written articles were either cleaned up and/or removed. On 28 February, Wikia staff promoted users Klow and MattyDeinhoff to bureaucrat status. In June, user YabbaMyIcing led the first community project to place all previously unused files onto content pages. On 6 July, project pages were officially added to help encourage new editors to assist with wiki content. In October, user Bramblepath was appointed to administrator.

On 11 July 2011, the wiki announced the decision to move, or fork, away from Wikia to a new, independent domain. Klow was responsible for creating a teaser website utilizing the new domain and introducing the new site motto, "Run. Think. Shoot. Edit.", while Bramblepath was responsible for the move itself. Two users, Fijure and Barnz, were appointed as sysops. The fork culminated from the diverging path of Wikia, with staff believing they sought to turn communities into advertising farms, profiting off the work of volunteer editors. The original Wikia wiki was renamed to Half-Life Wiki after completion of the move. The wiki officially reopened on 2 January 2012 at https://CombineOverWiki.net/. On 12 November 2012, the wiki moved hosting services to the website ValveTime, citing the need for superiors speeds and technical expertise.

On 3 October 2014, user Marphy Black was appointed as bureaucrat and as of 2022, remains the most active on the site. On 26 May 2017, the wiki switched hosts and updated to the latest MediaWiki version at the time. In November 2022, the Independent Fallout Wiki reached out to Combine Overwiki to form an affiliation, creating its first non-Valve independent wiki affiliation. In December 2022, the Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages joined as an affiliate.
