The Wikimedia Beta Cluster, commonly referred to as merely Beta Cluster, is a small wiki farm of test wiki running the latest alpha version of MediaWiki for MediaWiki developers. The main portal is at Beta.WMFLabs.org. Sometimes incorrectly called 'Beta labs', the WMF Beta Cluster is maintained by Wikimedia Release Engineering. Beta Cluster is not intended for research or other serious use of content. The Beta Cluster is a functional, production-like environment in the Cloud VPS that is suitable for final-stage testing of new features. It runs off git master, and has its MediaWiki core and extensions code updated about every ten minutes. Beta Cluster is one of the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) test wikis. It uses its own SUL login separate from production, so for example, an account for En.Wikipedia.Beta.WMFLabs.org (English Wikipedia beta) also works on En.Wikisource.Beta.WMFLabs.org (English Wikisource beta), En.Wikinews.Beta.WMFLabs.org (English Wikinews beta), En.Wiktionary.Beta.WMFLabs.org (English Wiktionary beta), En.Wikibooks.Beta.WMFLabs.org (English Wikibooks beta), En.Wikivoyage.Beta.WMFLabs.org (English Wikivoyage beta), Wikidata.Beta.WMFLabs.org (Wikimedia Wikidata beta), etc, but not on any production wiki.

It should be noted that whilst all 'projects' of the Wikimedia Foundation have their equivalent English language site on Beta Cluster, most of the other existing language versions (except for a very small selection) of their projects are not included on Beta Cluster, as is evident from the main page of the English Wiktionary beta.[1]

The Wikimedia Foundation, Inc. (WMF), founded 20 June 2003, is the wiki company and non-profit charitable organization[2] responsible for a very large number (over 900 in total) of very active wiki sites, grouped together and known as 'project'; as well as the wiki engine software initially developed by themselves, known as MediaWiki. The Wikimedia Foundations' major wiki projects started with Wikipedia (encyclopedia), and subsequently expanded to include Wiktionary (dictionary and thesaurus), Wikiquote (quotations), Wikibooks (open content textbooks), Wikisource (free content primary- and secondary-source texts), Wikinews (news source), Wikiversity (open learning community), Wikispecies (free species directory), and many others as listed below. Most of these 'projects' have separate wiki site versions written in many different languages. There is also the Wikimedia Commons (shared repository for documents, images, videos, and other media and text files), Wikidata (central space knowledge base for data used on all WMF projects), and the Wikimedia Meta-Wiki (coordination of issues common to all Wikimedia projects). The Wikimedia Foundations' global reach is nurtured in its Incubator, where all new language versions for all projects are initiated and developed before being launched as a new separate wiki site. The Foundations' most recent major project, Wikivoyage (a 'travelpedia'), was inducted to WMF in late 2012.

Wikimedia Foundation, Inc. is a member of the Open Source Initiative (OSI). Furthermore, the Wikimedia Foundation is a United States 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, granted April 2005, and headquartered at 1 Montgomery Street, Suite 1600, San Francisco County, State of California 94104, United States of America.[3]
